What does it say when you type it? Have you run Xconfigurator?

WooHooo! You broke X! I did the same thing over the weekend....

Here's how to repair;

If you have managed to break your X configuration somehow and cannot enter X anymore, you can use
xfdrake from the console to re-configure X . Simply, use the su command to become root and type XFdrake.

Linux can bring out signs of bad/cheap hardware. Boxes that will load windows might have linux bitching.

Linux does not ignore stuff like cheap main boards, ram, etc.

Sheet.

I have it running on a CompUSA Amerinote 366Mhz Celeron with 32MB of RAM, Riptide audio, Lynx Video chipset and a 2GB HD and a wireless card.

Running like a champ.

The only Windows O/S I could run on it was 98 or below.

LOL! What the fuck are you talking about? I have cheap shit in all my linux boxes... Minus my hard drives that go out, I never have any issues with hardware.

Thats just it, you arent learning anything, Mandrake does eveyrthing for you, to a point. If you cant get Mandrake to run, thats pretty sad, its like the Windows of linux distro's.... I started off on FreeBSD which was pretty hard, but it laid a good foundation on how to use pretty much any unix os. It took a few months to learn and get shit down, it doesnt just happen overnight.

Depends on what you are trying to learn.

If you are trying to be a network admin with Linux, I would install without a GUI and learn it from the command line.

If you just want to be a user, install Mandrake and be a user.

Spend a month at the command prompt.

It will be worth 6 months in the GUI.

Get off the GUI crutch, do you think REAL admins configure box with GUIs? Fuck no.... real admins log into boxes remotely with ssh and setup everything they need using custom scripts they make and other crazy things. Who browses the web on a server? Browsers serve little to no use for someone who wants to do real work. Downloading mp3's of kazaa, checking your email, and surfing the web is not work.

Are you not wanting to do real work? If you just want a fly desktop box, just put windows back on it and install one of those gay ass frontends to make windows look nifty.

Perhaps you arent understanding that you will never learn sitting in front of a gui. I spent my first few months understanding the console.

If I had to start all over, I'd start with something like gentoo, its so fucked up to start with that you will seriously learn a lot setting it up and configuring it. Dont expect to be handheld in setting it up as its pretty hard.

RedHat would be a much better starting point than mandrake if you are serious about learning.

It's a toss up to me, yes I want to learn how to admin a Linux enviroment but I'm not ready to give up the GUI. And now that I'm running Mandrake 9.2 I'm enjoying the OS as a good desktop and multimedia PC as well (execpt for the lockups which I hope to have fixed once I get the new vid card).

even newbies should provide more than, "it didn't work." just on that assumption and that this is a new install and that there's no telling what you installed during the graphical installation i'm going to think as little as possible. do:

[[email protected] ~]$ startx
-bash: startx: command not found
[[email protected] ~]$ echo $PATH
/usr/bin
[[email protected] ~]$ whereis startx
startx: /usr/bin/X11/startx
[[email protected] ~]$ PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/bin/X11
[[email protected] ~]$ startx

yay

also, you can modify your resource configuration file (.bashrc, .cshrc, etc...) and add your path in there so when you spawn a new shell your envirornment is consistent.
