Anyone have an eMachines PC?

They have some incredible deals on these PCs lately. Does anyone have one? How do you like it?

Cool. Thanks for the reply. I need something for the wife to use for e-mail and internet stuff. Something more reliable than fast. The PC I have now is something I build and is kind of an ongoing experiment. She gets pissed when she wants to check her e-mail and the computer is torn apart!

I've had an Emachine for a while, no problems and it does what I need a home PC to do. They are cheap!

New one. For that money you'll get one with a processor around 1GHz, 128-256MB RAM and a small HD (20-40GB). Most come with integrated LAN card so you're ready to go. Some even come with OS (Linux) installed.

How much were the E-machines you were looking for and what configuration? Would give me an idea what you're looking for and how much you're willing to spend. You seem to be able to built it yourself so I would just look at www.pricewatch.com and see if you find something for your need. Didn't see any ready to go systems there for under $150 but they do exist.

If you break it to parts, it's not a good deal. It's not a bad deal either as it comes ready in a box with a warranty.

Similar or better system self-made would be around...

$108 for AMD XP2400+ with motherboard (integrated video)
$033 for 256MB memory
$063 for 80GB HD
$029 for case + power
-----------------
$233

Add a few things like keyboard and mouse, speakers, those things don't cost much and you get to pick the ones you like. If you want to spend that $500 then you could get a pretty good computer with faster processor, add-on videocard, more memory and more HD.

Or you could get an assembled computer for less.

If you are just going to use it for e-mail and internet you dont need all of that.

Buy a network card and get this:

That one already has a NIC so don't even need to buy it. I have one, the 1GHz version, got it from Fry's for $100. Upgraded the OS to RH9 and now it serves as a server (firewall, http, ssh, couple gameservers etc.).

If you only need it for internet, it's ok for your needs. Ready to use with ThizLinux installed but I would still install RedHat 9 or something else.

OOPS, sorry, didn't read that it had a card already. I may buy one of these myself and use it as a server.

I ended up just buying an eMachine package. Here is what it came with.

2.00 GHz AMD Athlon
VIA KM 266 chipset
256 DDR RAM (PC2100)
80 GB HD
48x Lite-On CD-RW Drive
16x DVD Drive
3.5" Floppy
10/100 NIC
56k Modem
Onboard audio (sounds decent)
6 USB 2.0 slots (2 on front)
3 PCI slots, 1 AGP slot
Keyboard/Wheel Mouse
15" LCD monitor
Speakers (match the PC but they suck!)
Lexmark Copier/Printer/Scanner
Windows XP Home
MS Works
Money 2002
I installed Office 2000 and it seems to be running fine with XP Home.

They didn't have the printer it was supposed to come with so they upgraded for free. It was under $700 for everything at BestBuy (after rebates of course). I opened the case to check it out and it looks like I have room to add an extra hard drive and expand a little if necessary. The case and monitor have a small footprint and are nice looking. The CPU fan was noisy as hell but it is quiet now. I guess it just needed a break-in period. I just ordered a Linksys router and KVM switch from newegg.com to hook up my "old" PC. My wife is happy now!
