Looking for a game

I'm looking for a particular type of game. Not a 3D shooter but a warlike game similar to Command an Conquer Generals or Total Annihilation. The top view perspective where I can create troops, tanks, aircraft, etc and defend or conquer. Preferably as close to the real thing as possible. When I mean the real thing, I mean real units. Apache helicopters, stealth bombers, m1a1 tanks, etc. C&C generals requires too much resources and only one of my machines can handle it but it runs too slow so i've lost patience in trying to learn how to play it.
TA is great but i'm ready to move on to something with units like I describe above as TA has alot of made up units. Its a great game but I need something new. Preferably something that involves conquering countries or defending them, etc. Does such a game exist? i've gone to downloads.com and downloaded numerous games hoping to stumble across what i'm looking for but this process is tedius and time consuming. Not to mention its like looking for something in the dark.

Lemme know what you find to. I like playing TA but the AI isn't to good and playing against 2 or 3 computer players isn't to hard. C&C Generals is pretty good but like you said it's resource intensive and I can't play on my secondary machine at home.

Have you ever tried Battlefield 1942?? You can't really command troops, but you can implement bots - and the AI, if you have the processing power, is really good. Especially if you download the Desert Combat mod (this brings it to present day artillery/vehicles, etc. and Iraqi maps.

You can fly Apaches, Black Hawks, HINDs, F117's, F-16s, F-14's etc... drive M1A1's, Hummers, etc...

Isn't Battlefield 1942 a 3D shooter? He doesn't want a 3D shooter.

Yeah, it's pretty much a first-person shooter... But I was burnt out on the 3D shooters (Wolfenstein 3D, Medal Of Honor, etc.) when I came across BF1942. I've been hooked ever since. And the mods just keep coming, so it keeps it interesting.
