Question Pinging Secure servers?

What I would like to do is monitor a server that is external of my network to tell if the server is up or down. Normally I would think that you could just use a software that would ping, ping and ping a server to tell, but this is a secure server so I cant ping it. So by useing the webpage that is on it, is there a program that will request webpages over and over?

What does the server do? If it is a web server, just issue a http get every 5 minutes or so and then page you if it fails.

Read his post: Its an external server of his network. Sending SNMP packets over the net would not be very secure, IMO.
