Angry HELP! How do I get the pop-ups to stop?!

Some dumb fuck in the picture forum posted a link and we clicked on it. It installed a stupid porn search bar that I can't get rid of and I keep getting tons of pop ups. I've uninstalled everything that I didn't recognize and I've even restarted the computer. What now?

Thanks ya'll! I restored and looks like it's going to be ok.

Oh.. BTW... Cruz... my computer still does that shit where it goes into power saving mode whenever it feels like it. I got screwed on this damn thing.

Nope, tried that. I even totally re-installed Windows XP b/c I called HP tech so many times that's what they suggested. And then Cruz looked at it and I thought it was working ok but it still sucks. I should have bought a Dell.

Ya should've had one of us build one for ya, or built your own

And unless you're explicitly clicking on a link to install something (like Flash, or Windows Updates), never click yes when you go to a website and it pops up "Do you want to install "X Brand Software" Just for future reference. And if it wasn't you, beat this lesson into whoever's head it was that clicked on it

And, not sure what options HP's have in their bios, but you could try dissabling any power saving features in the bios ... might help.

Right click on the desktop, select properties, select the screen saver tab, click on the power button. Set all fields to NEVER, then hit Apply. Ok back out of it. now it should stop going to sleep.

I also agree w/ Dark Wolf. Probably should've had one of them build you a custom system w/ name brand stuff. Much better than the HP or Hell brand. (typo intended)

HTH, YMMV

I've done the whole power thing and that didn't help. Believe me, I've tried everything. Point is... HP sucks and I'll never buy from them again. Lesson learned.

My next computer will be built by someone. I wanted to do that instead of buying the one I have but I had one problem.... money!

Forgive me for not being "interweb savvy"

But what the hell does that mean?

I'm guessing HTH is "Hope That Helps" ... but I'm drawing a complete blank with YMMV.

You are correct, HTH, Hope That Helps.
The setting would most likely have to be in the Bios, then.

Try shutting the PC off, turn it on, and when prompted, press F8 for the startup menu. Just leave it at the menu and see if it goes to sleep now. If it does, it's a bios setting. If it doesn't go to sleep, it's software.

YMMV,

Your Mileage May Vary.

I also SCCA Autocross and roadrace my 'stang when I have the time (and money for tires. Them Kumho victoracers ain't cheap)

Well, I moved so hopefully that is better. It hasn't done it in a while so we'll see.
