How do I boot up in safe mode in ME?

I need to defrag and I can't run it or scandisk from the regular mode and the only way I know to get into safe mode is to restart the computer and before Windows loads to restart again then it lets me go to safe mode. Is there and easier way? Also when I try to run defrag and scandisk in the reg mode, its says too many files writing to drive C. How do I stop that so I can use defrag without safe mode?

yeah, right after you get past your POST(the self tests, memory count etc etc), start hitting the F8 key.. you should get a menu and you can choose safe mode

also make sure that you don't have a wireless keyboard cause it won't work.

You could also run msconfig, click the advanced button (I think) and put a check on the line that says something like "Startup Menu" or something like that. I haven't looked at one in a while so I'm not positive the exact wording, but it's pretty obvious when you see it

That'll just make that menu come up for 30 seconds every restart, so you can choose safe mode when you need it. Then you can uncheck it whenever you don't want the menu coming up anymore.

to run disk defrag, NOTHING can be writting to the HD at that time. if it doesnt complete when you run it, try disabling your screen saver.

No screensaver. I even turned off the power options. Turned off messenger(s), weatherbug, everything and it still won't complete,, I have to go to safe mode to do scandisk and defrag. I just want to be able to do it from reg. mode but to no avail.

You can get a program called Diskeeper (it's not free) which will run in a normal Windows operating mode. I use it and it's twice as fast as the defragmentor that came with Windows.

i second that.. the windows client pretty much sucks, plus you can set diskeeper to defrag for a few hours so it actually finishes it, while the windows client does not.. opinion of course..
