Yeah that pretty much sums it up

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land." Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said,"Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel, this is the Promised Land." Now Obama has stolen your shovel..., taxed your asses, raised the price of camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

Catholics believe in Purgatory also.

Quote:
Pur"ga*to*ry, n. [Cf. F. purgatoire.] A state or place of purification after death; according to the Roman Catholic creed, a place, or a state believed to exist after death, in which the souls of persons are purified by expiating such offenses committed in this life as do not merit eternal damnation, or in which they fully satisfy the justice of God for sins that have been forgiven. After this purgation from the impurities of sin, the souls are believed to be received into heaven.

- Webster's Unabridged Dictionary (1913)

Jews of the Old Testament believed in Sheol, similar in some respects to the aforementioned Purgatory.

To be "absent from the body" is to be "present with the Lord" (2 Cor. 5:8)

Although what the verse does not tell you is of the other side. I have been "absent from the body" and very much NOT in the presence of the Lord....it was something, but not God, and it was extremely malevolent.

Those in Christ will reign with Christ and then spend forever with Him, those not in Christ will eventually be thrown in the lake of fire after the great white throne judgment.

God commands all men to repent and believe the gospel, not trusting in our own works or self righteousness to be right before God but to trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross, standing in our law place, and atoning for the sins of His people. God is just and He does not simply forgive sins, our sins will have been paid for by His Son Jesus under God's wrath on the cross or by yourself under His wrath for eternity. May the Holy Spirit convict you of your sins and that you would call upon the Lord today and be saved.

Purgatory,
But the lift tickets are very expensive. Just buy a few from your local parish before you depart.

I'd like to believe there is an afterlife, but as a somewhat intelligent person, I also have to question it...

I often refer to religion as the boogeyman theory. When we were kids we were told not to do things because the boogeyman would get us. As adults, God/Heaven/Hell is used to replaced the boogeyman.

Intelligence has nothing to do with it. It's all about belief.

To question it is human, nothing wrong with that. Denying it is another issue all together because, again- it's all about belief.

for those that dont believe in the after life, then whats the purpose of living?? to live and die?? id like to believe there more to us being here than just being born and dying. ive thought about that question since i was 7 and to this day i hate the feeling i get when i think about there not being an afterlife. not because im scared but because this just can't be it.

Have you ever pondered how sinful man can stand before a Holy God and how you will stand before Him?

Eh, I'm a Catholic. All I have to do is go tell all of my perverted thoughts about high school cheerleaders to a priest and I automatically get issued a "Get out of Hell Free" card.

True Story!

Yes, it's a joke so don't let the white letters own you!

Hello

Just to add my piece I believe in a heaven and a hell but won't get into specifics about this.

If you want to be scared out of your wits read a book called "My descent into Death"...book about an atheist who dies claims he was in hell and gets out. I could not go into a dark room for weeks with out doing the run to the light switch deal...and heck I believe but am not arrogant to believe I have a secured place like stated in Matthew 7-

"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

Sheol from my understanding was a place outside of the Jewish city where they burned and dumped trash most notably statues of false idol's and Gods. So the fire became a symbol for God's judgment.

For me, when I take a look around the earth I see signs of an after life all over. A season of sping when life blooms which gives way to summer where things are at their peak and to autumn where things begin to fall and eventually into winter where things die and rest and eventually the sun comes and with it brings new life.

I just find it hard to believe trees and grass are more important and will live longer than me!

I have often thought that it may be that we are just worm food after death, but then i also realize that there are many unwritten "laws" if you will that man has no idea exists. Many. I mean take physics just for example. In 500 years, many new laws of physics will be known that we know nothing of today. The same can be said for 500 years ago. In the grand scheme of things, man knows very little. There could easily be some "law" man knows nothing of that says that once consciousness is achieved, it can never truly end. If that's the case, then we are going somewhere. But where? Heaven or hell? What if it's just another life somewhat similar to this one?

Then i have often wondered why even have a hell? I guess it's just some sort of prison? No prison can contain someone indefinitely. Give me billions of years and i will figure a way out. But if god is really indeed all powerful, why would you even need a prison? It seems much more likely that you would need a school of sorts rather than a prison. If he was all powerful he would be able to prove to you that you were wrong, and thus make you admit it, and change.

As for purgatory, to me that just comes off as a way to milk more money.
