What happened those three days?

Christ died on the cross. On the third day he rose again. What went on during those three days?

From the Apostle's Creed (Catholic & Lutheran):
"...He decended into hell. On the third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures..."

I can't find anywhere in the Bible where it says Jesus went to hell. Can anyone elaborate?

Denny,

This is a heavily debated thing amongst Christians. I heard many opinions/interpretations for years and personally - I do not know the answer. It is likey that no one does, and we may never know until we get to heaven.

1 Peter 3:18-20 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. KJV

The above scripture I have heard it used to support this idea.

Also, many say that this was when he actively took the keys of death and hell.

There is also this passage;
Quote:
Mat 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
Mat 27:53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
Jesus has the keys to Death and Hell. It can be said about those who had died and were in the grave could not leave until Jesus Himself died and went into the grave to release those who had gone before Him with the very keys He held.

You can take this for what it is worth but in the Gospel of Nicodemus it states in 20:1;
Quote:
And as Satan and the prince of Hell, spoke this together, suddenly there came a voice as of thunder and a spiritual cry: Remove, O princes, your gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall come in.
I personally believe that He did go into Hell but that is just my opinion. Like Lee said, no one knows for sure and we more than likely will not know until we all get to Heaven.

Jesus went to "Hades" (The theif on the cross went with Him) Not. "Gehenna"

He went to the same place that Lazarus went.

JC - I take it you are speaking of Abraham's Bosom or Paradise, right?

I do totally believe (failed to post this in my first post on this thread) that Jesus emptied paradise and led those saints to heaven.
