Anyone know the top 5 religious groups in the US?

We all know that in America, Christianity is number one, but I'd bet you'd be suprised what number two is...

2. Nonreligious/Secular
3. Judaism
4. Islam

What about number 5?

5. Buddhism
6. Agnostic
7. Atheist
8. Hinduism
9 Wiccan/Paga/Druid
10 Spiritualist
11 Native American

Part of the reason Christianity is number one is because they lump everyone together, Mormons, Jahovahs Witnesses, Catholics, Fundamental Christians, 7th day....ect, ect. Even those who say they are christian but only attend on Easter and Christmas.

I agree with MoonDog. Christianity probably falls much lower on the list than you'd think.

BTW,
Did you know that the word agnostic comes from the latin word ignoramus?

BWAHAHAHAHA! Now THAT I did not know!

It makes sense though, to not know or not knowing. My daughter took latin in school.
Synonyms are: bonehead, dolt, dunce, fool, half-wit, idiot, and moron.

Literally it means no-knowledge. As in no knowledge of a diety. Still funny considering ignoramus' contemporary meaning.

It was coined, and the word was derived from Greek.

Latin

Ignoramus, (Latin). In law, we do not know. In a different American usage, an ignorant person.

Mr. Barna - barna.org, did a recent poll showing only 4% of Americans have a biblical worlview, believing Christ is the only begotten Son of God, the Bible is infalible, and a few other essentials. Not surprising to me however. This figure that people throw out of 80% of Americans being Christians or 3x% of Americans going to church means nothing....nada....zip...you get the point.

Good info. I found these rather disturbing though.

37% self-described Christians are neither evangelical nor born again.
Roughly 10 million born again Christian adults are unchurched.
Two out of three (67%) unchurched adults call themselves Christian.

Mat 7:13 - 14 & 21 Tell us that is going to happen. So why should we be so surprised.

It is sad though.

You stated "agnostic" came from a Latin word. It did not. Thomas Henry Huxley coined the term, and he derived the word from the Greek a and gnosis.

a = without or away from
(g)nost/ (g)nosti = knowledge
ic = pertaining to

agnostic person = pertaining to someone without knowledge or who turns away from the knowledge.

Christians are Christians... they believe that Christ was the son of god, and forgave them for their sins...

the rest is just to each their own

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that Jesus is just an angel, not the son of God.
Mormons believe that Jesus and Lucifer are brothers.

Christianity is too broad a term these days. Yes the majority of so called Christian Religions align themselves with Christ's teaching but they miss the most important fundemental point, a personal releshonship with the incarnate Almighty God. True Christianity is this and this alone, a follower of Jesus grafted into the family a God. This can only happen through faith in Jesus by means of his blood sacrifice on the cross. The majority of "Christians" still miss this. That, I think, is what dallasstars281 is alluding to.

I think Matthew 7 covers this area pretty well.

Quote:
Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. (Matt. 7:13-14)
Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven {will enter.} Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' (Matt. 7:21-23)
