What does it take to get into selling cars?

If my son were to get into selling cars, what is needed? Where would he go first? How does the salary/commission work?

Thanks.

Just needs a couple of suits and an encylopedia of lies... I would think the dealer websites would show sales position openings.

If you really loved your son you would suggest another line of occupation...

I have some friends in car sales. Both ended up doing coke for a short period of time. Both started making big (70k+ / yr) money, went into debt, then got fired. They tend to cycle around to different dealerships. They live at the car lot, though.

Before I knew about the stress and lies, I saw the money, and wanted some. So I interviewed and got on.

At the interview, they'll ask- Why do you want to work in car sales? If you answer because you like cars, you like people, etc, you're not getting on.

The right answer is- "I'm behind on my house payment, I've got starving kids, I've got a 20k credit card bill, I need money SO bad."

That basically got me on. I won't go through the whole story, but I'm not cut out for it.

I've got respect for people who are, though. My buddy got back into it, is a finance manager at a local dealership. Makes his money off financing, warranties, etc. His YTD last October was 112k. He loves it. He is a money driven person, I am not.

Not all dealerships work the same. Most of the ones around here give you a 'draw', or a Salary, of say 2k a month. Now you sell a car, and make 300 bucks off of it. That goes towards the draw. Sell another, make 800 off it. You've now paid for 1100 out of your $2000 draw.

You don't make *extra* money until you get OVER your draw.

Also, if you end up not paying back your draw every month, you're fired.

I've never met a 20 year cars salesman that wasnt a owner.

Get him into school.

What you might call solitude is something i look forward to.

A good interview. There really are no official requirements. The car business is very cut-throat and unless he has to get money quick I suggest a different occupation. Just my personal opinion. Some people love selling things.

To really be good at it he needs a complete lack of morals. Having no soul is good too. After working around those people for five years, I wouldnt encourage anyone to go into that line of work. Car salesmen make ambulance-chasing lawyers look like pillars of the community.

Does your son want in "sales" or to be a car salesman?

The people I know in my line (that are sales) that make the low-high 6 digit or 7 digit salaries have no history in car sales.

IMHO, they are two different monsters. I know on occasion we've done car deals that went smooth, that still does not mean there is not shady shit going on behind the scenes or that they don't screw other customers, or did screw me and I just have not figured it out yet....

....That's the general mentality people have towards a car salesman. Some of that exists in other sales fields too, but generally the margin is much higher so that allows the customer to relax and the account manager to do extra before, during and after to make things right and ensure customer sat.

With a car salesman, you could hang yourself 2 seconds after the sale and he/she could really not care at all - other then you're probably scaring away other victims.

What's with salesman and coke, this isn't the first I've heard of this, I had heard of quite a few that did coke while I was working at a dealership.

That guy was a real douche.

Na, I did not mind that experience. However, even at that I was wondering where I was screwing up. (other then buying a cobalt. )

It's not like you can walk into a dealership generally and get a good or the best deal straight away. (or at all sometimes)

If test driving and visually inspecting a car wasn't a big part of the whole deal, I would buy a car online before dealing with a damn car salesman.

Yeah, I don't understand the whole cocaine thing either. Seems to be the stereotypical car salesman thing to do.
