Just curious, why do they only require 12 credit hours of college and everywhere else is 40 or more?

That is only if you do not have a HS Diploma. If you have a HS Diploma you do not need the 12 hours of credit.

If you look at all the other cities requirements it requires more than 12 hours. Denton and Ft. Worth are the only ones that only require a diploma. I was just curious why?

But yeah it makes no sense to me.

Why doesn't it make sense? I mean their requirements are lower than everyone else's? Dallas you need 45 or so. GP you need 60 or so. Not sure about other places. For FWPD you either need a HS Diploma OR a GED with 12 hours of college credit. They need cops and maybe there are people out there who would be good for the job that do not have any college credit?

I believe that link that leads to the requirements are for the last thread he made about them hiring. They have not updated for the upcoming one and what will be needed. As when i applied last time you did not have to have any kind of TCLEOSE cert. So that page might be for the last time they were hiring. If i'm wrong i'll put my foot in my mouth!!

This one is for those without experience so there is no license requirement.

FWPD only requires that you have a HS diploma. If no diploma then a GED and 12hrs of college credit. Some departments think you need a college degree to be a better officer which is BS.

BS does not equal Bachelor of Sciences.

most departments are getting away from requiring college hours. dallas is trying to lower the standards but keep getting it shelved at their meetings. places like mesquite, gp, garland, ect. are not in need of officers. the people they hire are treated right and stick around til retirement. a place like ft worth is a large department that needs officers and used to have a high turn over (not sure if its still true and it may have been due to hireing freeze not people disliking it) so they are still in the process of catching up with themselves.

and tcleose only requires 12 hours if you have a ged. you actually can come out of an accademy with 39 hours of college credit so if you just take your basic classes before entering an academy you should come out with an associates.

We've had a bunch of retirements coupled with the city outgrowing the hiring of officers.

Hmmm looks like the cutoff was July 12th. The only thing stopping me from applying to the police academy is, I already went threw boot camp 1 time, Don't feel like going threw another one.

You can sponser yourself for the Police Academy if you would like, I know that Cedar Valley Community College and Tarrant County College NW Campus are Para-Military style Police Academys, but Eastfield College is not. Hope this helps?

they need cops but they DQ people for the dumbest shit in their past. I cant tell you how many people I know that have applied and been dropped for something minor they SHOULD over look or let slide. Me as posted earlier, Possession of nunchucks when I was 18, now 29 with a BS degree in CR-J, been carrying a weapon for a living as a guard on federal property for 3 years now and I STILL get DQ'D for a CLASS A Misdemeanor that shows dismissed on the offical court document..

ITS FRUSTRATING!

lol it does happen, cant say it doesn't but you most ALWAYS have backup bro, dont be afraid to apply for that reasons. I'm a fairly decent size 6'3 230 played safety in college football, but a officer showed up at our property one day for a BS shooting, long story short was this guy couldnt have been more than 5'6 150-160... seemed tiny to me standing next to him...

Hell i've seen a small ass woman cop jump all in the middle of a squabble with a bum and another guy officer...

DUDE you get trained...BUT then again it is not for everyone...

your attitude in those types of situations will generally save you. thats when you want the other person to think your the baddest person on the planet and that you will do what you have to do to win the fight.

My gf is a cop and she is small, shy, and funny. But I rode one day with her at work and man she can kick some ass. It's is funny how even though she is small people who still do wrong know what the cops can do. But as he said it isn't for everyone.

No it wouldn't. That's a class c misdemeanor which isn't shit to anyone. I've got one and I'm on the hiring list for Dallas Fire and Rescue, Plano P.D., and Lewisville P.D.

FWPD sux! tried to get into the academy last year... passed the agility easily, polygraph easy, background was cake, then I got dq from something i said in the oral interview... only possible thing I can think of that would have disqualified me was when they asked me what my goals would be if appointed. I told them that I wanted to move up to a specialized unit or be detective as soon as possible because I didnt want to be a cop to sit in a car and give tickets for the rest of my life. Guess they didnt want me to be honest...

It's possible to be honest without disrespecting those who work in Patrol and enjoy it. Patrol is not about sitting a car and writing tickets. I'm gonna guess it wasn't what you said but, how you said it.

Today is the last day to apply for those of you that are interested. Thanks for your interest and I'll post up the next one I hear about.

I would bet you got DQ for your attitude and lack of knowledge about what patrol officers do. I am actually pretty glad you got DQ until you grow up some. I am not saying you shouldn't ever be a cop, but you need some growing up first. Good luck.

BTW, the guys who write the most tickets at FWPD are in Traffic, and it is a specialized unit. The other specialized units are mostly made up of guys/girls who have shown to be hard workers in patrol.

< --- wonders why anyone interested in being a cop would not want to experience the wonderful job that is being a patrol officer.

You are misinformed and I happen to be very grown up thank you. I never said anything derogatory about patrol or any unit for that matter and I am quite aware that traffic gives the most tickets and is a specialized unit as well as the fact that everyone has to start in patrol to move anywhere. Actually I had fun on the patrol ride-in. I was trying not to write a 10 page post about what went on. I simply answered their questions as honestly and professionally as I could. I had no attitude whatsoever. My BI even told me that the interview went very well.... Actually, every FW officer I have ever met has been nothing but professional with the exception of one. I wont go into details, but he was one of the cops on a power trip. Enough with my experience though... Good luck to anyone in the process!

Hey, I'm going to hit you up in some PMs. That's PMs, not PMS.

LOL, never mind. In the course of typing out my questions, I answered the underlying question on my own.

Fuck da poh lease.

I can't say for FWPD, but one thing I tell anyone applying is to make sure you're in good shape. Well, at least be sure that you can run. The last thing you want to do is get in on day 1 without being able to PT. Just get your body acclimated to it well before an Academy starts.
