Post Carrollton Fire Dept

It's that time. Our annual test is here. Read below for info and if you have ???'s just post them up and i'll answer them.
We hired over 10 this last year which is a lot for us and we'll be hiring at least 5 right away after this test and more as ppl retire...

##################################################

This is from the city website.......

The city of Carrollton hires firefighters from a list of candidates who participate in an annual Civil Service Exam. Upon receiving permission to hire new firefighters, the department begins a screening process of the top ranked candidates. The list of candidates remains in effect until a new Civil Service Exam is given.

We will be accepting applications (packets available on line) beginning June 11, 2007 thru close of business on June 22, 2007. The Civil Service Entrance exam is currently scheduled for July 14, 2007.

The Carrollton Fire Department conducts a Civil Service entrance exam approximately once a year. To submit interest for a Firefighter position for the city view our employment page.

Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35 as provided by Chapter 143, Section .023(a)(b) of the Texas Local Government Code. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Successfully completed 45 semester hours of courses from an accredited college or university. An official transcript(s), which verifies the 45 hours, must be turned in with the application.
Pass a written examination with a minimum score of 70.
All applicants who are hired become probationary firefighters and must commit to the following requirements of employment:

Obtain a Texas "Regular B" driver's license within six months.
Attend, complete and pass a fire training school within twelve months.
Maintain a satisfactory rating on monthly performance evaluation reports.
Pass a written exam with a minimum score of 70 after six months and after twelve months.
Attend and successfully complete training as an Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic.
Refrain from using tobacco products in any form.
Veterans
As provided in Chapter 143 Section .025(e) of the Texas Local Government Code, applicants wishing to receive veteran's points (5 pts.) on the entrance exam, must produce a DD214 Form for active duty or an NGB Form 22 for National Guard service indicating an honorable discharge.

Physical Agility
Applicants who are selected for the final employment process must be able to pass tests designed to evaluate strength, coordination, physical ability, and physical agility necessary to perform routine fire department tasks.

Height/Weight
Weight must be proportionate to height.

Medical Exam

Visual acuity must be at least 20/40 in each eye without correction, or corrected to 20/20 in the better eye and at least 20/50 in the lesser eye.

Driver's License
Applicants must possess a valid driver's license. The driving record of applicants who are selected for the final employment process will be checked.

Background Check
A background check covering previous employment, credit history, and criminal record will be conducted on each applicant selected for the final employment process. The background check will also include a polygraph examination.

Interviews
Applicants who pass the written examination and all other screening steps outlined above will receive an oral interview prior to hire.

So do you have to have the EMT training before you apply, or are you allowed to do it while training for the FD?
I always thought you had to have it before you even bothered applying
Or is it just different from department to department?

You do not need fire/emt certs for our city. We will send you, pay for it, and pay you during school.
Really all the need to take the test is 45hr of college.

Base pay is just under $50k a year.

Any idea on what the average turnout for the tests are. I am not prior military. I hear at the mega departments where there are 800 or more people, you pretty much need those 5 points to even be in the top 15..

Not so much here. There will be about 100-140 people only. The apps. are only taken for a couple weeks and the college is what keeps most away.

If you score a 90+ you should without a doubt get an interview.

This year we called up over 50 to go through the hiring process. Half of everyone that even took the test got a shot. I think the score got down to the low 80's....

Well maybe bad news. I only have 42 credit hours on my transcript.
I can get more.
My Fire academy was an accredited academy but you had to pay extra at the time and I didn't. I will see if I can find it.
And it is 56 miles for me 1 way to the Central station.

Hurry up and get the academy on your transcript.
56 miles is nothing for working 10 days a month. I drive 35miles myself. We have guys that drive over 100 miles....

There is NO traffic when we're on the hwy's.

Um, you work 10 days a month and make 50k per year?

If that's true, I need to look into this.

Really it's 9 days a month average cause you get 11 1/2 days of vac/holiday.

50k is starting. You can make 60k within 2 years easy.

Yeah, it's an awsome job, it doesnt get any better if you ask me, it's not all about the money and time off either.
