1960 Olds Ninety Eight makeover....

I think I have a passion for pain, I seem to love to turn these basket cases

Here is 1960 Olds that I just recently finished. A little history on this job....

Paint was thin, and by thin I mean THIN!!! At it's thickest point it was 2.1 mils, and the thinnest was 1.2 mils. And original Laquer paint at that! Nothing was working at all. So I took it upon myself(with the owners OK of course ) to do some experimentation. Finally found something that worked like a charm!

Here are the before's...

It was very late when I finished, so I wasn't able to get any good after shots. But here are a couple during. I plan on going back out there to get some good "after's" this week sometime.

Obviously with the paint so thin, the goal of this car wasn't removing defects, only to make the original 47 year old paint shine.

Funny, I thought the only thing that could do that are the products you see on TV at 3am or the guys out at the State Fair with a "junkyard" hood. lol

Lets see the rest of the "after pictures" Nick.
Old laquer paint like that is a bear to work with. Pads load up fast.
Ive heard guys are doing really well on jobs like that with the Meguiars Solo system on a rotary, cleaning pads very often and being patient.

I've been trying to get back out there to get some pics of the car, but things just haven't worked that way yet. The car is now out at Pate's, and I'm going to try and head out there this afternoon to get some pics. Not sure if I'm gonna make it or not, but I'm gonna try.
As soon as I get them, I'll post them up.

Cool Danny, Thanks!
I'm headed out to Pate's this afternoon to get some good "after" shots of that car. Meguiar's wants this info for R&D because of the product I used on that paint. So I'll be out there around 3-4 this afternoon.

I can certainly appreciate the work you did on this car, looks good. There is no doubt you have skills.

But there is something about the patina in the before pictures that I really dig.

Thanks for the compliment.

And you are correct. I would perfer the before look. Maybe clean it up a bit, throw a different set of wheels on it, but the patina look definitely gave it more personality. But, in the end this is not my car, and I do what the owner wants. And this owner wanted his car shiney

That really is amazing. If I didn't have so many chips in my paint I'd probably let you have a try at my 57. I really didn't think it would look nearly as good as it turned out.

I've thought about it, but there really are a lot of chips(some rather large)in the paint, and it is also laquer that was sprayed about 30 years ago. I also kind of dig the patina look, but some days I wish it was shiney. I'll think about it.

(I also think it's in a lot worse shape than that Olds)

Dude, it's BLACK.

Fix the chips and polish everything else, I bet it would look WAY better. We can repair those chips anytime.. go get some touch-up paint from your store.

Exactly, black shows EVERYthing! Went and looked closer yesterday and the entire hood just about has cracks in the paint. Seriously, can shit like that be fixed with a buffer and some wax? I'll take some pictures. Nick, how much would something like this run, as I'm assuming it would be very time consuming. You can PM me if you want. I'll take a few pictures of some of the problem areas.

I really don't think there is any help for this aside from an entire repaint. We're talking a little worse than dull or oxidized paint here.

Yeah, that all looks like hammered shit. Especially the parts where someone got overanxious with a buffer and went through the black. But Nick did a job on some cracked lacquer on a '69 Camaro that was flat amazing.

If you don't feel like fixing it, then paint that mofo! It's really not that hard to do the prep - and you'll learn a new skill. Leave the rust repair and major body damage to the pros if you want, but slinging bondo over minor bumps and getting the surface prepped for paint is pretty simple.
