Get you a long board sander and some sandpaper and sand in a cross hatch pattern. Sand in the shape of an ex..........one way and then cross it the opposite way. If the existing paint is already okay, just use 400 grit. If there is stuff to fix and you want to prime, use 40-80-primer----then 180-320 or 400.......up to 600 if you want.

Or, if you do not want showroom quality........get a red scotchbrite pad and go to town. Make everything nice and hazey and use a wax and grease remover on it.

Post up what you're sanding, why you're sanding it and what your sanding surface is like, flat etc.

remember, sand 45 deg. to the body curve. don't spend too much time in one place.

Be sure to have someone show you how to use your new best friend: the dual action sander.

You'll want to finish it, prime it and block it with the long board file for sure, but with the right paper and technique alot of time can be saved using the d/a jambs, underhood, and lower panels. It will work wonders for you when you're sanding out rock chips etc on the hood and front bumper. I wouldn't go ape shit on 1/4's and longer flatter panels until you really know how to use it . Long story short, you'll never escape having to sand the car with the long file multiple times if you'd like it to look good, but you'll want to buy a d/a sander as well.

Will you be painting it yourself? Most shops would rather do the prep work themselves if they're painting it also. I'd PM Sdun or Booster32V and snag a couple quotes.

If the part is not peeling or anything like that, just grab a red scotchbrite, a bucket of water and some Ajax or Comet. Wet the scotchbrite, put some Comet and scrub until no shiny spots are left. The comet is to help in the sanding process. After you are done, you should have a even dull finish. Rinse and wax and grease, tack rag then shoot.
If the part is severely chipped or peeling, it will need to be primed. If this is the case, back up, turn around and call the nearest proffesional.
