Man, this could turn into a long debate! But here's my opinion. For certain exercises, certain machines are good, and free weights are good for others. Both can be used to a full advantage, if performed correctly. Cables are good, Hammer Strength where each arm, or side, is Isolated, and of course free weights are good. I personally prefer free weights, with cables for certain deals, like Flyes, curls, triceps, etc. I rarely ever use true machines, but do like Hammer Strenths.

Yea. A long debate is right. But what it boils down to is what works for you and what you have access too.

Me personally, since I dont usually have a spotter or workout buddy, I use dumbbells. Its easier for me to workout on my own with them and not get caught under the weight. It also helps build up each muscle individually, instead of cheating one side of a workout. Like bench presses.

I use cable weights for stuff like incline flys, rope crunces, and lat pulldowns. Maybe triceps too.

But I've seen big mofo's use cable machines for isolation sets.

I have always thought that a mixed effort is good. Some exercises use free weights, some use dumbells, some use machines. That gives you the "total" work out. Machineswork certain spots throughout the motions more than others, which keeps certain muscles from growing, which is why you use free weights to work the other muscles. JMO though.

I definetly like to incorporate both. Machines can help isolate and keep from cheating but like Shane said...you have a possibility of not building symetrically. Free weights are great for those days without a spotter in sight and they also help to work stabilizing muscles as well. Most of my workouts start on machines and end with free weights or I use a free weight exercise as the second exercise in a super set. Seems to suit my tastes.
