How important is your diet?

I am experiencing first-hand that you truly are what you eat. Over the past month and a half I've been fine-tuning my calorie intake, and was able to make some important tweaks such as cutting alcohol and almost all saturated fats. Over this time period I was exepcting to lose a little size and strength as a concession to burning some fat, but the scale and mirror show otherwise. I am feeling/looking leaner as expected, but in doing legs last night I found myself to be the strongest I've been on leg day, ever. Although the changes in body composition and strength have been ever so slight (patience is a virtue), after and a half weeks of "dieting" I'm up 3.5lbs with a loss of a percent or so in bodyfat. A near perfect diet truly is the key to your fitness goals. Don't get me wrong, I am soooo craving for a slice of pizza and a Mike's hard lemonade, but the sacrifice has been well worth a healthier physique.

Just another caveat, I managed to do the above without a lick of cardio or abs. That start back up Jan 1 with all the other resolutioners.

Nothing too appetizing I assure you.

Breakfast:
1/2 cup oatmeal (precooked) with a scoop of protien and heaping tablespoon of glutamine and a hard-boiled egg

Snack:
1 protein shake made with water

Lunch:
1 chicken breast, 1 hard-boiled egg, 2 fat-free hotdogs, 3 slices of fat-free swiss, and 3/4 cup of oatmeal (precooked)

Snack:
1 can of tuna

Pre workout (1hour prior):
1 protien bar

Post workout:
Protein shake with a tablespoon of glutamine

Dinner:
2 chicken breasts topped with fat-free chease and light Marinara

Pre bedtime:
1 protein shake made with skim milk and a tablespoon of glutamine

On top of all that I supplement a multi-vitamin, and CLA (conjugated Linolic Acid) for enough fats.

I pretty much eat an identical diet daily except on my one cheat day a week where I'll eat a little more "normal". I find it's easier to stay on track this way, because food becomes purely nutrition and fuel for the body, not recreation. It's easy to keep portions under control when you are eating something bland, you tend to eat for necessity, not flavor.

Hey Aaron,

Where is the best place to get the protein and glutamine? I am experimenting a little and want to get some but I don't want to get ripped off on any of it.

I get all my supplements at Fitness Essentials, right next to 24 Hour Fitness on Parker and Alma. It's a "Mom and Pop" store with decent prices. I know the owner and his wife and am in there weekly so I get even deeper discounts. Discounts aside, they've got a decent selection at good prices and most of the staff is quite experienced and can answer most of your supplementation questions (anything you can't get answered here that is).

well about four months ago, I started working out again and was gaining muscle mass back but no obvious weight loss with all the cardio. So Aaron suggested no carbs in the evening and I have lost 15lbs in two months and love it.. just 15 more and I will be sound as a pound. THX AARON!!!

Man, I have been somewhat copying the diet you posted up and I have already noticed a difference with only doing it for a week.

Simple and protien rich (not atkins though) is the best way IMO.

I've started to watch what I eat more, I havent gone into the whole reading the nutrition facts yet, I just eat less of foods I know arent good for me. I've been eating more salad and drinking lots more water, gone from 4+ Dr Peppers a day to just one in the morning and one at lunch, followed by 2 cups of water on each DP. I have been eating wheat thins for breakfast/snacks, and a decent lunch followed by a healthy dinner and a salad, I'm starting to feel much better internally lmao.

Right now I'm using a brand called Dymatize. In the past though, I've usually bought Twinlabs, but my supp store was out of it when I restocked.

Many people swear by the Atkins Diet, but I personally don't think it's a healthy way to go. Your body needs carbs to function properly, any diet is based on depriving you of one of your basic needs cant be good. Also, a radical change like that is alot harder to adjust to when you go back to a "normal", you are more likely to get back into your old patterns and gain the weight back.
