Body fat calculations

I haven't done this since college, back then the health center @ Tech would do it for you. What is the best way to do this now? Should I just buy some calipers and do it myself, or does 24 fitness provide this service? Anyone know?

Every once in a while I'll see them out front at 24Hour doing the caliper tests on people. You might ask a trainer up there if they'll do an evaluation for you.

Also, next door in Fitness Essentials they have a "bod pod". It calculates your bodyfat by inputting your height, weight, and measuring the amount of air youy body displaces. It's kinda like the water displacement version you've heard about. I dunno wht the cost is though. If you do it lemme know, I'll need to get mine checked again in another week or two as well.

I don't recommend buying calipers, it takes a good amount of practice to learn to get accurate measurements, and shouldn't be done on yourself because you'll be bending and stretching, which will obscure the measurements.

I may get laughed at for this, but....

I bought one of those scales at Wal-Mart that I guess measures the resistance through your body when you step on it, and it seems to be OK for my purposes - tracking a trend. I know it's not 90% accurate or anything, but it does work pretty well for following progress. The number goes down, your BF % went down. Now, how close that number is to your actual BF% - no clue.

I hear what you are saying, it's like a scale that's off a couple of punds or a dyno that is a few ponies low. It won't give you an "accurate" maeasurement, but it does allow a baseline on which to compare any minor or major changes. Especially since goals with one's body are purely subjective and in constant flux, it is necessary to track the progression of your measurements, not necessarily fixate on a specific end result. The closer you get to that weight or percent, you may realize it's not exactly where you want to end up.

You'll find that the good ones (like the upper end Tanita) are pretty good. The thing is that you have to be properly hydrated to find the right BF%. When you are dehydrated, the scale will freak and give you a rather low BF. Also, the better shape you are in, the less likely the results are accurate. Go figure.
