Question Ab routine

Someone may have already asked/had this question answered, but I'm going to ask it again (read: too lazy to search)....

What is the best way to do abs? Like when I started hitting them I did everything with high reps, but that quickly got time consuming. I had to do a ton of crunches just to get a good burn. Now I'm using just machines at the gym: the seated leg raise/crunch thingy, the oblique twisters seated thingy, and the seated crunch (have no clue what they are really called....sorry ). And I'm doing 3 sets of 12 on each of these pieces. My question is, am I puttin too much emphasis on weights now? Is there a balance that is the most desirable? I've seen good results with the weighted approach, but I'm always looking for improvements. Of course, now that I've put the ab time in, I could see better results with a little cardio and fat trimming, but that's a whole other tangent

Your abs respond better to higher rep schemes, but as with any program, variety is key. I personally shoot for sets of 30 on any given ab exercise as I am on a dieting phase, but when bulking time comes around I'll throw in a low rep set or three. Abs also like to be worked more often than other muscles (calves as well), so I alternate them every other day.
