I have found that the most effective lean-mass preserving diet is a high protien/low fat/low carb diet. Not the Atkins diet by any means as carbs are essential for muscle and brain function, but stay away from simpe sugars and saturated fats. Keep protien above 1 gram per pound of bodyweight, and add healthy carbs to a point that you are are averaging -500 calories a day.

Just read labels to see what kind of fats are in what you are eating. Staying away from junk food would be the first step. Soda and beer don't contain fat, but there are way too many empty calories and sugar, which will metabolize too easily into fat if you don't burn it off.

As for protien, keep it to a gram per desired pound of desiredlean mass. If you want to get to 180, eat 180 grams a day. Eating a little moe is fine, but make sure you watch your over-all intake. At your weight I'd start with 2500 calories and go from there. If you think you can get away with less and not feel deprived then go for it. After a week see if you lost weight and tweak your diet from there.
