I have found that the most effective lean-mass preserving diet is a high protien/low fat/low carb diet. Not the Atkins diet by any means as carbs are essential for muscle and brain function, but stay away from simpe sugars and saturated fats. Keep protien above 1 gram per pound of bodyweight, and add healthy carbs to a point that you are are averaging -500 calories a day.
