I have found it to be more effective to do cardio at the beginning of you day, as it boosts metabolism for quite some time following the actual exercise. Exercising after work isn't bad, but you could possibly be fighting to go to sleep if you workout late enough, and once you are asleep, your metabolic rate drops substantially, curbing all fat-loss. Regardless of the time of day (given that you are working nights), I'd suggest doing cardio right after you wake up and before "breakfast", or as soon after you get off of work as possible.
