2010 Goals

Well, it's that time of year again. How did everyone do last year?

My goal this year is to do a full marathon, stay around 215-220 weight and increase my strength back to at least 90% of my journals before my injury last May.

2010 - mainly working on shaping the muscle groups.
After hurting my lower back about five-seven years ago, I started back to squating in 2009.
I've been working on deep squats a lot lately(I'm very tall and it's truthfully my weakest link).
I will never be a power lifter, but I want 465lbs pretty much ass to ankles, 10 times, no suit.
Everything else, I'm plenty strong at.

I've put on about 20 from my lowest weight, and really just plan to go back to what I know works.

Hoping to drop about 50 pounds this year, and get down to 235 or so.

Maybe put on a little more muscle mass along the way and I'd settle for 250s

I've really just made a lot of excuses as to why I stopped working out, but now that I've got a new job, new apartment, and everything has settled down, next year looks like a year with no more excuses

You're only as strong as you allow yourself to be...

Goal for 2010 is to get to below 190 by March (currently 208), start introducing some weight lifting into my excercise routine (currenlty just doing cardio 3 - 5 times a week). Not looking for any specific gains, but would like to add some muscle and tone up a bit.

For the remainder of the year, would like to maintain my weight arround 190 - 200, be able to do 50 push ups, 100 sit ups. Would also like to look into running a 5k and maybe even a half marathon. Continue cycling, look into increase endurance/length (currently cycle about 10-12 miles daily).

Some good goals in here.

I had some set backs in 2009.
I broke my hand in March and popped my hamstring in early November.

I'm sitting about where i was last year with an extra 5-8lbs of good weight.
Probably wont be doing another powerlifting meet till July in Lewisville. Plenty of time to rest and slowly increase the weight during training.

Lean out a bit more and focus more on BJJ instead of strength training.

I don't really care what I weigh. I just want to be around 10% body fat again. I'm probably in the 16% range right now and weigh 223 at 6' 1".

220 is my goal this year I am at 257 ish. It will be 30 pounds lighter then when I left high school damn near 20 years ago and a hell of a lot stronger. I am happy with my strength. I bench around 315, curl around 125 and leg press around 700. I think at my age its time to focus on cardio, core and maintan my strength.

215lbs of lean mass

My sole focus for 2010 is getting in serious shape. I really want to step up my BJJ training, with intense cardio and weight training. I want to be in the 204-224 division so I don't have to roll with the monsters. And who knows, maybe I'll get lucky and draw Nate at a tournament.

To actually do some type of working out ALL YEAR.

I started at 205-210 last year working in Feb. Got down to 165 (i'm almost 6'2" so people were saying i was too skinny) and stayed around 170-175 after my trip to Florida when i stopped working out but was still eating right. Then i stopped eating right cause i stopped caring and the weight slowing started coming on.

So, i started back on my "diet" yesterday, eating 6 times a day and i weigh 190lbs to start this time around.

My goal is to have a six pack and get that V at my hips. It started to show last year so i know i can get it. So, if i can keep lifting (i don't lift much) i would be happy weighing around the 180-185 mark.

Haha, it's all good. I hope you meet your goals Nate. When are you testing for blue anyways? You shouldn't be too far away from it by now if you have been training for awhile.

Blue is a long ways away...Only been at it for 4-5 months (started mid july) so possibly 1.5 years from now I'll test. Not really worried about belt rank, focused more on learning and coming up with "my game". I went out and competed, really opened my eyes to the adrenaline dump, and how much different it is from rolling/sparring in class...geez.

I will probably compete at some smaller tournaments in the next few months and more than likely will skip the Naga on Feb 20th and wait for one later in the year.

I've somehow managed to drop my weight down from 185 to 170 through the holidays. Goal this year is to maintain some consistency in my workout routine and get back into my 30" waist jeans.

im with Chuck... I need my consistency to stay bulked. Im normally lean when not lifting 4-5 days a week. 6'3 210-215, I like to be bulkier and lean at 225-230. Just have to stay in the gym. Also would like to get back in the MMA gym I was training in for added conditioning which I NEVER do on my own. Just core conditioning training, not to fight....

Love to fight but knees are junk..

then again dont want to be fighting heavy weights either

Ah, I figured you were alot closer than that. So you're only at 1 stripe at this point? I hear you on your game. I have to really focus and work on the techniques both right and left handed. Most techniques are taught favoring right handers, so I have to train both sides really hard (and I should anyways like everyone else) but being left handed really screws me up sometimes. I'm really enjoying it too. It's even motivated me to hit the weights which I really hate doing. But it's important to elevate my game as much as I can.

Yeah, competition is alot different than class sparring. Everyone is much more aggressive looking to use techniques they normally dont/cant use on teammates. I enjoy the competition part of it because I can be aggressive and see how I'm measuring up and what I really need to work on.

How did you do? I didn't get to go sadly, babysitter canceled on me 3 hours before hand. I believe Carlos has a members/affiliated thing coming up, I want to give that a shot too.

Yeah 1 stripe, missed the last test for 2nd. Should get that pretty soon, not worried about any of the techniques on the test honestly.

First match (no gi) I flat out got beat and worked by a dude from Arkansas. He took me down and had good top control, I never could get out from under him, wasn't in any horrible positions until I gassed, tried to upa he popped his hips moved to t mount, I kept rolling and he took my back game over. Guy ended up taking 2nd out of 18 people in our division.

Gi, I pulled 1/2 guard from standing (I SUCK at takedowns), when I missed pulling full. He passed took mount (up 7 to 0), I upa'd passed took mount and was gassed again at this point. Instead of waiting for gift wrap and being patient and playing my game I thew a weak armbar that I normally would hit, he powered thru and passed and won off that. I was better than the guy and should have beat him but I just tensed up and didn't think like I normally would on the mats in the gym.

Took from xmas off this week and ready to hit the gym running on Monday. Going back to lifting too (took everything off while I moved the woman in)...that may have been a bad idea on both sides (not lifting/working out and her moving in haha)

Well, the great thing is you got something really invaluable out of it which is experience. Even if it didn't go as you hoped, but at least you tried. That's alot more than most people. It really is a game of patience rather than brute force.

If you'd like some help with your takedowns, I'd be glad to help you out if you like. With my years in judo and wrestling, takedowns are something that I excel at and really enjoy.

I just want to get back to BJJ. I trained for 8 months and then stopped for the past 4 or so. I'm making good gains in the gym now and I'm putting on some weight. Around March I'll start dieting to lean up a little.

Thanks for the offer, I simply need to work on them, I usually start sparring in class from the knees or pulling guard instead of standing up. Going to start working with a few of our wrestlers when I hit the ground running in Jan again.

That's cool. Good luck with it. Just always keep in mind when you are wrestling and doing takedowns that you are doing the opposite of BJJ by trying to minimize distance/gaps instead of create them. Keep good hip/head control and you will usually be in a good spot.

Is there a specific running regimen you are following for the full marathon? Or just trying to run as much as possible? Miles per week? What are your long runs each week?

My goal is at least a half by summer, and then see if I can squeeze out a full mary by winter time.

I know you didn't ask me... but ... here is a good thread:

http://www.runnersworld.com/communit...al-thread-list

I am following Higdon's plan and here is the one for 1st marathons:

http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/Mar00novice.htm

I will tell you this... I'm running Austin on Feb 14, and I ran 20 miles two weeks ago, and I would NOT have finished another 6.2 miles. Everyone has been telling me there is no replacement for mileage, and I am pretty sure I agree to an extent. Similar to no replacement for displacement... Anyway, here's a quick snap shot of my training the last few weeks:

Week / Mileage / Sunday Long Run

Wk12 - 44 - 18 @ 9:10min pace
Wk 13 - 46 - 20 @ 9:10min pace
Wk 14 - 48 - 22 @ 9:10 pace
Wk 15 - 34 - 12 @ 8:45 pace
Wk 16 (now) ... and I wish I had more mileage leading up to this, but it's my first one so just finishing will be good.

My goal is for the full is 9min pace, and my training is probably a little too fast. Most people will tell you the length of time spent running on your long run is more important than how fast you ran it.

Awesome. Kenny C, SuperWho?, thanks for the info.

Kenny C, Sub 10 min pace sounds killer for a marathon. I'm not sure I'd have that in me. I've always struggled with endurance, so this should be interesting for me. Although, I've never trained for anything, so maybe that's what I've been lacking. I played indoor volleyball through high school, but that didn't necessarily take a lot of endurance. Anyways, good luck with your training. I have a new found respect for runners since I started running last August.

Just FYI - I'm just a fat ass who decided to be a little less fat... I ran in high school but that was 15 years ago and I have only been running for the last 2.5 years. I have dropped from 275lb to 225lb and I'm 6'2". I have had 5 knee surgeries... so if I can do this then just about anyone can. Stay positive and just keep doing it.

The hardest part of running is the first :30 of the run...

Are you fukking crazy?

They make cars and bikes and shit. There is no need to run 26+ miles.

Actually, the hardest part of running is getting off the couch. Kidding aside, I know what you mean.

When I get into something, I tend to go all out. For some reason, me and running click, even when it was cold as hell this morning, I was enjoying the hell out of my run. I still hit the weights, bought a complete smith machine setup and a ton of weights and db's for the house. I am now Gym free.

If that ever happens again you call me, the wife and I will watch the little one for you. As for me I am going to training at the MMA gym with JKD starting in a couple weeks. Just had shoulder surgery a month and half ago and trying to let it heal a little more. Once I get approval from the doctor I will be hitting the weights hard and running. I want to cut down to the 195lb from the 235lb I am now.

I see my doctor next week, so I should be joining the week after. I am about to bring my weight bench back to my house so I can start lifting once I get cleared on that. Starting cardio again next week and the diet. I'm going all out BJJ, weight training and cardio. I lost 30lbs last time the wife was pregnant lets see if I can do it again ( just don't need to gain it back this time )

Trust me I'm looking forward to it. My old lady keeps telling me to go up there because that's all I talk about, I just don't want to rush the shoulder
