New personal best!

Even though I'm starting to get sick (getting up mortar like phlegm), I felt good today in the gym.

I worked back and then started my tricep exercises as usual with reverse grip bench. I felt pretty strong so I tried something I've never done. I went up on my weight and got 315x1 fairly easily. I usually get 275x6 and 295x4 on a good day.

It felt great! I've never had the balls to go 315 reverse, but there was a guy at the gym this morning that I trust. He's an (older) guy (46) who is a brick at 5'7" and 195 lbs. If he hadn't been there, there's no one else I could have had get it off the rack and spot me.

250 is no joke.

It might be to some in here, but to the average person, that's a lot of weight.

My spotter said I got it easily and wanted me to try 335, but my right elbow was starting to kick out at 315 and I didn't want to risk it.

Congrats! You will probably find that once you break that plateau, the higher weight (10-20lbs more) comes easier. There wasn't a whole lot of difference between 315 and 335 to what I could feel.

Excellent job dude!
I too hit a new best of 385 x 6 reps x 3 sets, reverse grip on the smith machine on Wednesday.
But the real question is... can you scratch your own back?

Yes, it's a tricep exercise.
Main thing, keep your elbows inward when pressing the weight.

Yeah I bet. I'll probably start with one plate on each side and go from there. So does this just workout your triceps or does it do anything else. I guess it will also workout your chest.

It does involve chest and shoulders, but if you concentrate pushing up from your elbows through the wrists you'll feel it. My tri-s were pumped for a long time today.

I tried 315 again on the next tricep day just to see if the first time was a fluke.

Elbows in is more of a front delt exercise. Any time I've seen guys go heavy on "reverse grip bench" they've got their elbows way out, making it a chest exercise with a little more delt/tri involvement than regular grip. It basically rotates the pec insertion a little farther across the shoulder girdle, which targets more of the outer pec/shoulder, and less of the inner chest. Some guy have genetically gifted shoulders and can do as good or better with reverse grip as opposed to regular.

Good work Matt, keep it up. Hell, I'm looking forward to the day I can get back under 315 for reps on regular ol' bench press.

I agree about the delt comment, but I still feel a better burn in the inner chest/triceps with inward elbows.
I can lift quite a bit more with outward elbows though.
To each their own though!

I'm sorry, for some reason...I was referring to a close grip bench press, not a reverse grip.
I actually hit triceps last night and used a very wide reverse grip when pressing the weight and I could feel it very good in the outter head of the tri's!
As for my elbows, you are correct...they were flared out pretty good as well.
Different is always good in my book!

Had to bump this.

After tearing my labrum in my right shoulder last May, I lost a LOT of strength on all my pushes, and just recently started back to pushing non-pussy weight. Anyway, since I've started getting back to normal, I remembered this thread and realized I haven't done any reverse grip presses since before the tear, so I decided to add a few sets yesterday.

Drum roll.... 135x8 & 155x8. Felt AWKWARD as hell, and I didn't want to risk going any heavier due to the tightness in my right shoulder.

I'm a puss.

Russ/Ross, I've got a lot of popping when I roll my right shoulder and general weakness on lifts. I've had pain in the past a few times, I'm strongly leaning to rotator cuff damage.

Get that shit checked out, I got SUPER lucky that I didn't destroy my shoulder by trying to 'tough it out' for as long as I did. Now I just have to deal with being a weakass pussy.

My right shoulder pops on my first set on bench, 155x8. But it doesn't seem to do it on the other sets, strange

Pops, grinds...it's all part of the game.
Working out is abuse on one's bone structure, plain and simple.

My shoulder doesn't pop at all when lifting, I have a deep, dull pressure-like discomfort When I'm doin any press... it'll click and pop when I roll it Unloaded (especially arm up & down motions)... It feels a bit unstable on heavier weights.

I'm 6'1, 200, round about 12%. I squat ATG 455x8, DL over 500, and run a sub 16min 3k. I'm still rehabbing the shoulder, so I probably couldn't push more than 225x8 at the moment.

Not sure what that has to do with what you quoted.

Awesome, those numbers are very impressive man!

bert89coupe, if those numbers are true and the lifts are done correctly, obviously he does both!

IMO the only impressive part might be the running, for a 200lber, my lifts are far from impressive.

Cool deal, is your number still a 817 number? Just keep me updated on when you come through. During the week or weekend?
