Artifical sweeteners

What's the general opinion of artifical sweeteners? Is there any side effects or down sides anyone is aware of? Splenda, Sweet'n Low etc.

They're all bad for you. Memory loss, slow metabolism, etc.

I'd rather have 40 calories of sugar in my coffee, thanks though.

I'm just going to skip it all together. I've gone cold turkey on sugar and caffiene. 9lbs last week, but bad withdrawls and headaches. Not quite up to one gallon of water a day yet, still working on that.

Sugar 4 me.

Look into natural sweetners. I use to use a diet years ago like that. Some of it is nasty as hell, but some is pretty good. I'll look for a link.

Memory loss... are you serious?

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land." Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said,"Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel, this is the Promised Land." Now Obama has stolen your shovel..., taxed your asses, raised the price of camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

Damn... that sucks because I love my sweet tea and I was under the impression using Sweet & Low was better then using sugar.

Impressive work so far, Steve. But don't be afraid of a little cheating. It's a lot easier to follow a gradual lifestyle change than a drastic one, IMO that is the reason so many people fail to stick with programs. They put too much pressure on themselves to be perfect.

Thanks.

I'm at a total loss of 31lbs so far as of last week. I've gained some muscle, (I can feel it the strength difference) my wind is getting better from running but it would be nice if this weather would cooperate so I can run everyday like I want.

In regards to my diet, I'm not trying to put too much pressure on myself to be perfect but rather make better choices when I can't eat as healthy as I would like instead of just saying "fuck it" then slippin back into old habits. When I slip up, I get right back on the ball and don't do that worst mistake I always did before by saying "Eh, I'll just start again tomorrow" Procrastination is a motivation killer.

Splenda is the favorite by far, at least with us low carb peoples. Takes a lot less to make things sweet too. Also has way less negative press.

Srsly? Just because it hasn't been around long enough to have been subjected to intensive long-term testing doesn't mean it doesn't have its negatives. It is still a chemical substance, even if it has fewer calories than sugar.

As I've said before, there's more and more evidence that artificial sweeteners spike your insulin in much the same way sugar does, so it's going to make you store fat anyway. A moderated amount of regular sugar or honey will out do artificial sweeteners for that reason and everything else in this thread.

Stevia is all the rage now, and supposed to be a lot better. I kinda fall in the "Ill just have the 40 cal. sugar in my coffee" crowd.

Exclude is right btw, your body will metabolize it the same as sugar. No gain in the long term. It just looks better on paper.

I would rather have natural sugar too. Calories be damned, I don't like all the chemicals. Natural is better IMO. It's all about moderation.

We've been using Stevia, we've tried truvia (Stevia + Erythritol) which is pretty good but takes quite a bit to equal the sweetness of sugar. Also have been using Sun Crystals which is Stevia with Pure Cane Sugar, better flavor but has 5 calories wher truvia has none. You can find both at your local WalMart in the Sugar/Flour/Spices aisle.

I only use two splenda in my coffea in the mornings. Everything else I have become accustomed to drinking with out. There has been some pretty extensive testing on it and I know it works when doing low carb. It is def better then the others before it. I do not drink diet drinks very often but the ones made with splenda are so much better then the ones before that were bitter. Eat low carb for any amount of time and you just lose the taste for soft drinks all together.

We use organic sugar and sometimes sugar in the raw. Every artificial sweetener has had some fucked up side effects, and more harmful than it is good.

The point of this thread was that my wife read an article that artificial sweeteners slow the metabolism. I was wondering if anyone else would bring up that fact but no one did.

I'd be much more concerned with adding chemicals such as chlorine to my body.

Yeah sucralose(Splenda) has chlorine in it.

http://www.kensavage.com/archives/sp...ic-and-poison/

Research in animals has shown that sucralose can cause many problems in rats, mice, and rabbits, such as:
* Shrunken thymus glands (up to 40% shrinkage)
* Enlarged liver and kidneys
* Atrophy of lymph follicles in the spleen and thymus
* Increased cecal weight
* Reduced growth rate
* Decreased red blood cell count
* Hyperplasia of the pelvis
* Extension of the pregnancy period
* Aborted pregnancy
* Decreased fetal body weights and placental weights
* Diarrhea
