With "I threw my back out" such an ambiguous term, it would really depend on how severe it was. When I first started working out, I had no muscular development in my back. I was going to the chiropractor every other week for one of two pinched nerves and lived in chronic discomfort. Now, almost 1.5 years later, after focusing on my back a bit, I haven't been in months and other than having a tired back from time to time, it's much better. If you don't like the advice of your Dr., consider a second opinion from a sports Dr. They're much better intuned with the needs of athletes and serious hobbyists. Good luck.
