From a purely competitive sense, it is a good idea. The less distance you have to move it the better. Same reason powerlifters do the HUGE back arch when benching, draw the shoulders together and presto! bar only travels 8-9 inches tops...

Haha, good point.

But in general, when it comes competition time, powerlifters are looking to make it the shortest distance from lift to lockout thus allowing them to lift the most weight they possibly could.
