Bulk up or Cut up

I've been working out for a good month now. I'm 5'9 right at 180. I'm wanting to get bigger like most people. I have a little pooch going on in the stomach area but other than that I'm good. Everyone was telling me to just keep working out to bulk up. But now for some reason I have a ton of people telling me to get cut first then start to bulk up. And now I'm all fucking confused on what to do.

Decide on your own goals and don't let other people do it for you? Or maybe your dirty bulk has you looking fat

Pretty much... When you bulk you're purposely taking in a surplus of calories. It gives you more energy, your muscles aren't going to be used as a calorie source (reason people lose size and strength on incorrect cutting regimens) and you can build sze the fastest in surplus. That is the purpose of a bulk. If you're already heavier set, you can go into a deficit of calories and still maintain size and strength. It's a fine line...

How big a belly are we talking? If you are very prone to gaining fat, I would cut down first. A cut 200 always looks bigger than a chubby 220. But if you can cut fat quickly and lean up fast, bulking up would be a good idea because you don't have to worry about how much time it's gonna take you to lean up after wards.

Like Don said though, It's a fine line, if you are heavier set, you have to be spot on with your diet and cardio. Never get where you can't see your abs. If you can't see them now, you have your answer.

X2 but you should be able to do it all at once. Just set your goal and remember what you want.

you CAN do it all at once! i started out that way but then i realized that if you do it in cycles then you can end up with better gains! its true you burn fat and calories during weight lifting but its different when your diet is different! diet is the key! for instance when im bulking i eat more red meat than when i am cutting! little things like that in the diet is all that i really change, the amont of carbs/protien/fat ratio! other than that the cardio is pumped up alot more on cutting cycles and i add in some HIIT on some weeks! just some advise but do what makes you feel cofortable!
