You youngsters got me thinking...

I've been slacking off way to many years in the gym.

I lost my workout partner in 1990 when he got out of the Marines just before Desert Storm.

He was 5'9" 205 lbs. He was a power lifter from his college days. He did a competition in Florida when we were TAD at Homestead AFB.

He pulled a 585 deadlift, 620 squat, and 410 bench.

I've never competed, but since he got out, I've been lifting on my own.

I started at 6' and 170 at 19, now that I'm 40 I'm at 220 lbs.

I haven't been pushing myself for years, just going to the gym and going through the motions.

I guess I should get serious again.

I did chest today and used the Hammer Chest bench machine for 340x6 , incline dumbells 110s x6 for 3, and then some decline bench 225x8 for 3 sets, and finished off with the Hammer Strenth chest fly 250x8 for 3.

I'm gonna be sore tomorrow.

I've always found it fascinating how much a workout partner affects the productivity of a workout routine. I know that for me to get anywhere I have to have not just a partner, but one who knows lifting well and how to spot...etc.

Do you lift flat press at all?

Rarely.

Mostly because of no spotter. For 315 I like to have someone there. If I stay at 275 I don't usually ask.

On reverse grip bench the I need help with a lift off at 225 just because it's awkward. At 275 I use a spotter because I struggle with the 6th rep. At 295 I seem to start failure at 4.

Not bad, but I know I could do better if I had a consistant partner. I'm not into slapping each other around and using salts, but just to have someone there to push you helps tremendously.

I'm not into all that grunting and yelling shit.

i have never worked out with a partner before, but now i think i want to find someone and try it. i have been slacking off in the gym for a while now. not seeing any real results and getting bored easily and leaving.

It's not that I get bored, and I'll never leave. I've been known to cut a workout short, but I at least get one in.

A workout partner will prompt you to go heavier or eek out another rep. Something I rarely do on my own.

When you are basically challenging each other, there's a competition between you that you're trying to outdo the other.

Unfortunately, my old parter was leaps and bounds ahead of me. I could never put 225 on the military press and crank out 8 reps. Or put 495 on the squat bar and go for sets of 10-12. Or curl a straight bar with a 45 and a 10 on each side
