100lbx5 reps

Iím in triple digits again on dumbbell press. I know its not allot of weight but its a testament to how far I have come along.

A little history on my situation. Eighteen months ago I ruptured two discs in my neck c5, c6. The doctor said it was due to years of lifting weight and was a degenerative issue that I would ignore. I went from weighting 210lb and lifting 120lb dumbbells on bench reps of 8-10 to not able to open a door with my left arm by myself. The ruptured disc left my left arm in a state of paralysis due to the pinched nerve that ran out my spine and down my left arm. For months I went through all the emotions, depression, anger at myself and then finally the acceptance of my problem and what I needed to do to fix it. The doctor performed a fusion on both of my disc. Thatís where they go in there, move your esophagus out of the way and take bone from a cadaver and fuse it where the disc once was. Then they bolt a plate to my spine the size of my thumb. I went from 210 to 175lb after the surgery. It took months of rehab to get my left arm working again to where I could use my triceps muscles. I have been lifting weights for a little less then a year and just steadily getting a little size back.

Btw i count my first lift as a rep when I don't have a spotter.

I wrote this not for someone to feel sorry for me, but maybe someone is dealing with a injury or any other issue that maybe this will keep them motivated.

I may never be where I was, but im content with where I am now.

Congrats man...that is my biggest fear in life(being injured or paralyzed).
You just show even when injured, it's overcomeable!
Keep up the good work and good luck.

I really cant complain. The surgery wasn't a bad experience at all. I would recommend it to anyone dealing with back problem that cant be cured by shots.

The tingleness and numbness in my left arm disappeared and my feeling came back almost instantly after the surgery.

Haha, well we all have to start somewhere!

Didn't you mention something about laying off the weights and focusing on cardio? It'll be a new world for you as well.

Congrats, its good to see that you kept up and are getting back into it. What all can you do for treatment of neck disks? I have pain in my neck due to c6 and c7 being slightly bulged but the doctor said it shouldn't be hurting or may hurt Some people. His only advice was to take an anti inflammatory when it hurts, but thats pretty much every day as I'm always active.

Sounds like you may have it under control. I would watch what you do; a bulgeing disc can be just as bad as a ruptured one. They both can pinch a nerve. Pinched nerves are the worst part of spine problems. It sucked not able to use my left arm for almost a year. Alot of your upper nerves in your spine have to do with your upper body, and the lower nerves effect your lower body. You might want to do some checking and see if there are any treatments out there that can move the disc back into place without surgery.

This got me courious so i took some duct tape to the gym to what i could do 5 reps with. Our gym DB's only go to 125 but with some 5's and duct tape you can get more.
Made it up to 145's X 5. I'll shoot for a fresh 150's x 5 next time. Got some weard looks using the tape. haha

Man, weren't you worried about if that falls that on your forehead???!
Very good weight, but when you outgrow machines and weight,
why not just resort to drop sets, supersets, or maybe even pause reps?
Keep it up though, you're strong as shit for your size.
I wanna see another person do the 200lb db's.
I've only seen three people in my real life rep them...Johnnie Jackson, Branch Warren, and Jay Moore.
I can get the 150's, but I'm honestly tapped out there.
Then again, I ain't no powerlifter.

i dont know if i could do them. but i was doing 150s on incline for 12-15... i never did them on flat bench because 150s just didnt feel heavy enough so i stuck to barbell flat bench.

This summer at the lab our largest dumbbells are 100's, luckily I've been focusing more on my back and legs than my chest, and I really only got back into lifting about 6 weeks ago. This week, fresh, I did 1x12 70's, 2x10 80's. I'm happy with the progress.

The duct tape held the 2 5lb plates on each side of the dumbell.

No, i wasnt worried, duct tape is plenty strong for 10lbs. I wrapped it two ways.

150 is more than awesome.
Very few people can actually control that kind of weight.
I do LOVE watching people pick up the 125's and the 125's control them, instead of vise versa!

LOL.. 80s control me when i carry both of them to the bench but i can still throw them around for 8-10reps on incline. Im going to try 90s one day this week for shits and giggles. I was able to do 80x6-8 on incline last week on my last set (4-5) i dont remember but i was pretty tired.

Ya, theres alot of that cool factor there when you get into that kinda of weight; especially when you bring duct tape with you to the gym and slap on more plates.

I guess im pretty damn cool then. Y would you take a stab at me like that?

I lift for strength and strength only. I dont care for diet or cardio and while im getting the bars "dirty" with my chalk and sniffing my nose tork i could care less what others think of me while lifting heavy weight.
Powerlifting is my hobbie, i dont call people a ferry for doing lighter weight, high reps, and prancing around on the cardio machines, i insted help them when needed however i can.

Man you read way into too much of my post. I didn't mean that to come across as a insult. There is a cool/wow factor when going big, No doubt about it. Im impress when people go heavy like that. Thats all I meant by it. I wouldn't insult someone who just posted a compliment to me, why would I do that?

haha, i was wondering myself. I get a lot of that at the gym i go to because it's a fitness center. People dont think i should lift heavy or something, but there's really no where else to lift untill we build our own gym.

Shoot, 120's are still no joke!

I don't get to hit incline dumbbell press very often,
mainly because I don't have a partner and there is no way in hell that
I can sling 120lb db's up!
I do a bunch of flys and crossovers mainly for chest though.

Very few people can actually control that kind of weight.
I do LOVE watching people pick up the 125's and the 125's control them, instead of vise versa!
haha

Well, shit, 125x2 is 250 fukking pounds. That's a lot of weight. Unless you're obese, there probably aren't too many dfwstang-ers that are 250 lean.

I'm 220 and I use the 110s on incline bench for 6, but I touch the outside of the dumbell to my shoulder, unlike some of the kids I see in the gym going down 4-5" and calling it a rep

150lb db's are a whole different ballgame than 120's.
It takes "light weight" to another level!
I agree with the half reps, but I will say this, when I incline barbell I damn sure don't touch the bar to my chest.
I guess those half reps do work.

I say "GREAT JOB" to the guy with the neck problems. That is quite an accomplishment after a major neck injury. Keep up the progress and never look back!!

Dumbell bench is where it's at man. Completely different feel from barbell bench.

That's from the dumb asses dropping them from full extention. That shit pisses me off when I want to use a large dumbell and one of them is broken because people think it's cool to throw them.

I don't know if I'll ever be able to handle the 150s. Remember I'm over 40....

What size are you?

Congrats on the progress. Not to read like a dick, but in that set it didn't look like you were using your full range of motion? Just saying hopefully you aren't lifting too heavy too soon risking further injury.
