The Honda RN-01 G-Cross is a mountain bike produced by Honda specifically for downhill racing events. Honda is not a manufacturer of bicycles and this bike is not commercially available to the general public. It was introduced in the 2004 racing season by the Team G Cross Honda who compete in the NORBA and Mountain Bike World Cup points series races.

What sets it apart from most other bicycles is the fact that it was developed specifically for race use by the Honda team using many purpose made components not commercially available. It is also different in that it uses an internal gearbox instead of external (dérailleur) gearing system, which although not unique to this bicycle, is quite rare. The gearbox on the RN-01 is specific because it is not a classic gearbox like the Rohloff Speedhub for instance. Inside the gearbox there is a classic derailleur, a cassette and a chainring. The freewheel is not placed on the rear wheel but in the bottom bracket so the chain is constantly moving when the back wheel is spinning. This allowes the rider to shift gears without pedaling.

Honda was protective of the internal gearbox technology, often requiring mechanics to remove the gearbox from the bicycle after use.

Honda chose South African rider Greg Minnaar to début this bike in 2004 as the then reigning World Downhill Champion.

The Honda G-Cross Team has now ceased to exist and the project has come to an end - the bikes are never going to be available to the general public.

Honda RN01G…

Bikedaily reported on the RN01 coming to production, and now that dream is almost here. It will be called the RN01G apparently instead of the RN01. Offical word is still mum, but it looks hopeful. Rumor’s are still flying around and some include Honda making an appearance at Interbike. 2008 RN01G?

Word on the street is that the Honda RN-01 will be offered for sale as a frameset only. I’ll take one! Wishful thinking at this point still but we can only hope it’s true…

“Details are still under the veil, But Honda decided to sell their bikes for “frame kit”. Some bike dealers got some kind of invitations or informations by postal envelope from HRC. HRC will have press launch on June.”

Looks like a downhill Moutainbike with internal gearbox..

I know it's been posted already, but it's basically a downhill bike with an internal gearbox. Prototype shit not really for the masses. I guess you may be able to get something like it for a small fee. I'm guessing between 7500 and 15000 even if you could get one. Most of the badass downholl bikes on the market run anywhere from 3000 to 8000 now. All I can ever think of is "dude, you ever take it off any sweet jumps?" I'll say that 75% of that bike is the front fork and the gearset.
