BJJ Peep's inside--->

Just started training BJJ about 2 months ago and I know there are other BJJ guys on the forum here. I'm curious what a typical workout week for you consists of outside of BJJ? I'm obviously interested in increasing functional strength for BJJ and cardio as well. Not looking to get huge or anything.

Just train with 70-80% of your max for 8-10 reps. Avoid max weight for low reps and you won't build the bulk you don't want.

Do about 3-4 exercises with 2-3 sets per exercise per body part.

The main thing is to stretch before AND after you workout to maintain flexibilty.

The key here is to build strenth without the bulk while maintaining the flexibility to fight and to maneuver in and out of holds without getting hurt.

If I were working out for BJJ, I'd be doing CrossFit like a motherfucker. Great core strenth/cardio workouts. Varied enough to keep things interesting too. Shit, I'd do it now, but it's fucking hard, and I don't think I'm in good enough shape.

"CrossFit is a strength and conditioning fitness methodology aimed at creating "the quintessential athlete, equal parts gymnast, Olympic weightlifter and sprinter."[1] CrossFit promotes broad and general overall physical fitness. CrossFit is not sport-specific. It features varied workout programs based on functional movement performed at high intensity. Workouts are brief (often 20 minutes or less) and do not use weight machines.[2]"

I agree 100% on this. CrossFit can be extremely difficult so it helps to know your limitations.

Where does everyone train? Anyone in the Denton area?

I have been doing Hapkido for about 6 months and looking to change over to BJJ. Currently looking at DBJJ or NTMMA. Any suggestions?

thanks. I have heard the same from a couple of people on other boards. Only draw back being no classes during the day. They would be the closest and fastest to get to.

I go back and forth on what I want to train. I have a couple of years of mcodjo karate, some LINE training from the Marine Corps, some basic combatives from the Army and almost 7 months of Hapkido. Hapkido being the most intensive and physical of them all.

Even in Hapkido I have no problem taking most anyone to the ground. This is preferred for me since most of them are TKD students as well and I hate getting kicked in the head with fast feet. So I figure I might as well focus on what happens when I get there.

I am somewhat interested in competing (sport). Way too old to compete MMA at 37; but can see the benefit of training with fighters.

And your quote cracks me up. I have seen a couple different trailers and laugh my ass off every single time I watch.

What weight are you wanting to stay around or get to?

All of my MMA and JJ friends still lift similar to a typical strength workout. NOTE: That's not the same thing as a powerlifting workout.

You'll be fine if you do a heavy set with low rep, but make sure that's not all you do. A BASIC pyramid is a good place to start. Supersets will help alot as well. Just stretch between sets and you'll maintain your flexibility if not improve.

I'm training at Carlos Machado's school in Farmers Branch three times a week, Muai Thai/JKD at home and with other training buddies. I've just started with the weights recently and it's trial and error right now figuring out the right routine for myself. Since I've gotten so damn fat, my soreness is carrying over into other workouts. Right now, I'm just suffering through it the best I can hopin it will get easier. I'm already pretty flexible for typical martial arts, but BJJ is anything but typical. So I've stepped up my stretching to twice a day using the stretches for BJJ that Carlos has taught me.

Just be sure any school you look at, go in and watch a few classes. Talk to the head instructor, ask questions.

I've heard good things about Wario (Nick), NDBJJ and of course the Machado's.
