riding a bicycle to work, opinions on mongoose mountain bikes

i wanna start riding to save gas and lose some weight, i am already eating alot better but can't seem to get into running . my job is only 7 miles away so i figure that would not be too hard on me as a start.

i see mongoose mountain bikes on craigslist for around 50-75. since i'm not sure if i'm going to like this or not i would rather not go spend 500 bucks on a bike that i might not use. however if i like the ride then i'll upgrade later on after i know i am gonna keep to it.

thanks

Look for a "cruiser" style. Fixed gear and a little heavier, but inexpensive. Hills are a bitch, until you get used to it.
