Thumbs down Damn it, it's already started

Slowly but surely my mornings at the gym are taking longer and longer to finish my routine. Why, you ask? The ever popular "resolution crowd" that has no fucking clue or business being in the gym. It's like there needs to be a school for the newbies. The last two years I would be cool to the new and obviously inexperienced gym goers, dropping a hint or two that what they are doing is rude.
This year I have decided to try a different approach. This morning a rather large man (read obese) was on the bench press struggling with 25 pound wheels on either side of the bar, no spotter. He takes no less than 5 minutes between 3 sets of 6 He finishes, gets up, and starts to walk off leaving the weights on the bar and about half a gallon of sweat on the bench. I was livid! I call out to him and he walked back over and I gave him a quick version of the riot act since I was already late waiting on his ass.
Oh well, just another month or two before things go back to normal.

I agree but when you leave the equipment all sweaty, thats nasty, other then that I'll find some other workout to do if someone is taking forever.

That does not excuse rude and ignorant behavior. What is so hard to understand about that? Please don't take that as a personal attack, I just really don't understand your logic.

as long as they respect the other users of the equipment e.g. putting up the weights, and wiping down the bench if they sweat all over it, ect. ect.

no it doesn't and i don't think you should leave equipment the way he did but to say they dont belong in the gym is wrong. if anything they need to be there way more than you

I go to the gym around 2pm so it's usually pretty slow. I did, however, notice more people there today than usual for a Thursday.

Good point. If I was going to start doing something new that required some knowledge I would first do a little research. Hell, even the books and literature I read now still talk about the basics of gym life and how to co-exist positively with the other members. I wouldn’t go skydiving or snorkeling without doing my home work.

If the gym were full of driven and motivated people on a program, I'd have no problem working in or waiting my turn. It's frustrating as fuck though, to have your flow interupted by a know-nothing pretender, that thinks by squatting on a machine for 5 minutes he will magically transform his physique. I am one of the biggest propents of how daily exercise can literally change one's life, and have always been more than happy to give advice when solicited. Beginners don't frustrate me, you have to start somewhere. It's the wanna-be's that won't step foot in the gym again come March that are wasting my time and their own.

I love my gym, you have to have some heart and determination to go there. Your average New Year's Resolution gym-goer prefers a 24 hour fitness or a bally's...

It used to irritate me but I think I have just learned to grin and bear it. They pay membership and for the most part I feel sad for them....vicious cycle. I just try to go during the off hours. It will be over by Valentine's (for the most part). I just wish they didnt stare so much. Makes me self conscious!

Actually I do, just not that much lately. Lost 44 lbs from November of 2005 to August 2006 through running mostly. Did a little lifting this year, but never got completely in it because I was just too busy. Hope to start again this year. Not looking to get big, but would like to tone and get stronger.

If you see someone staring at the bench, ask them if they want to alternate sets or whatever.

Nice job!

You not going get too big as long as you dont use gear. Even if you lift like a powerlifter everyday.

There is no such thing as overtraining, just under eating!!
