Questions on getting lean & losing some weight

Ok. I am adicted to caffine really bad. I have been trying to break myself from the Cokes & anything with sugar in it for that matter.

Does drinking Coffee in the morning affect me losing the weight at all is my question.

Also any suggestions on how to lose 20lbs in the belly. What did you do to lose your weight in your belly?

When I was younger I had a freaking 6 pack & could eat anything I wanted. Now I gain weight like crazy.

So what foods should I avoid like the plaque.

Example first on list

Cokes
Candy
Coffee
Pasta?

Alcohol, fried foods, bread, fatty sauces and dressings. If you're training a coupe times a week, that's probably a good bit of cardio, just clean up your diet, and it'll come off.

Seb,
When we get to a certain age the belly fat can be a real bitch to get rid of completely.
But yes, diet will certainly help your cause, as well as cardio and weight work.

I've been on a strict regime for most of this year (since March) and have lost 31 pounds, toned up and gotten stronger. I eat healthy carbs in the morning, (Special K, Total, etc), a turkey and wheat sandwich or similar for lunch, and a healthy protein-oriented meal in the evening (chicken, turkey, lean beef, etc) w/ some fruits and veggies. After dinner I hit the gym, focusing mainly on cardio stuff like the Stairmaster, eliptical, the bike and treadmill.

I've tried to give up as much white sugar as possible (soda, candy, cookies, cakes, etc) and replace all of that w/ pecans, almonds or walnuts. For a sweet I'll now have a square or two of dark chocolate (much better 4 u than milk chocolate). I've dropped my 1 to 3 beers (big belly fat contributor!) a night altogether, and now only drink one day of the weekend (huge sacrifice but I feel a shitload better...unfortunately-ha).
Lastly, I try to NEVER eat anything after 7 pm. And of course, drink lots of water.
No chips, no pizza, zero fast food, etc. It's a bitch, but I think it's worth it.

Back to the belly. 125 crunches a nite have helped along w/ all the diet and cardio, but I've still got a little pooch my doctor said is mainly excess skin I'd have to have cut off (!!!) So no thanks to that.

Best of luck to you. Just cutting back on the "White Devil" of sugar and some of the more delicious foods we all love like pizza and burgers will really help.

Oh, and I'm a big coffee drinker and still am w/ no ill effects. As long as it's not loaded up w/ sugar and cream as someone already mentioned it shouldn't have much impact.

Do you smoke cigaretts, Sebastian?

The itching is probably because you have poor circulation; and when you are running on the treadmill it gets your blood to flowing.

I have terrible circulation, and I tingle/itch after getting a friggin massage.

Seb,

A buddy of mine gave me this... It's been around the internet a few times, and on quite a few mma boards, etc... Take it for what it's worth, but it's a damn good start.

10 Tips for fat loss, in simplest terms.
I've found more and more that the average person just has no clue when it comes to proper nutrition or fat loss. Having a background in bodybuilding and powerlifting, I am often approached by friends and family for diet and exercise advice. I'm always glad to share my thoughts and experiences with others. This is just an effort to put together most of what I've learned over the last few years and maybe to help give a jumpstart to anyone who is new to this and wants to drop some fat, but doesn't want to do all the research. For the intermediate or experienced lifter, this should all be review.
I am not a nutrition expert by any means, but have read and applied as much information as I could. These are all things that have worked for me, and primarily used to control my body fat level while increasing my body mass. I have used the following tips to bring my body weight from 165 up to 205 over the last 3 years while keeping my fat level below 13%. I have been as low as 8%, but it no longer suits my personal goals to strive for such a low percentage of body fat. I truly hope these tips will help get you on your way to fast fat loss.

1. Drink plenty of water.
At least a gallon of water should be consumed every day. Water will not only keep your body hydrated, but it will help carry waste out of your body. Avoid "designer" water and carbonated "water". These products, while still better than most beverages, are not water and do not carry the same benefits. "But I don't like water" you say. Learn to love it. It loves you.

2. Eat 5-8 meals per day, every 2-3 hours.
This should be nothing new to anyone. Just in case, the primary reason for increasing the frequency of food consumption is to increase your metabolic rate. If your body is in a constant state of using up the calories you consume, there won't be much room for those nasty fat cells to start filling up. If possible, you should try to count your calorie consumption. 10xyour body weight= calories per day. So if I want to lose weight and I weigh 205lbs then I should shoot for 2050 calories per day. Eat more, not less.

3. If it breathes, eat it.
Your diet should consist of an abundance of fish, poultry, lean cuts of beef, vegetables, fruit, and nuts. Natural food is much friendlier to your digestive system and your body will thank you for it. Try to eat a vegetable with every meal. Even if you don't want to count calories, these meals will provide a rich balance of nutrients and promote fat loss. If you're a vegetarian, please go and try to feed some hummus to a lion. Let me know if he likes it.

4. Breakfast is really the most important meal of the day.
Most people don't eat a good breakfast, if they eat anything at all. This meal is crucial. Remember how your body works better when in a constant metabolic state? Well, you just slept for 8 hours, and you weren't eating anything. Your body is starving and if you don't eat something soon, your metabolism will slow down and begin to store that fat you've worked so hard to get rid of. The best things to eat in the morning when focusing on fat loss are nuts and meat. Try to avoid sugars this early, as your body is highly insulin sensitive after a fast and you don't want to feed the beast when it's most hungry.

5. Eat something before bed.
A popular myth in the diet world is that any meal consumed before bed will turn into fat overnight. This couldn't be further from the truth. You must eat before you sleep in order to keep your metabolism working while you're enduring an extended fast. The best foods to eat are slow-digesting proteins such as yogurt or cottage cheese.

6. High Fructose Corn Syrup is the devil.
This widely popular sweetener is probably the single worst "food" you can subject your body to. It holds no nutritional value and will serve only to spike your insulin levels and help you pack on fat. HFCS is found in most processed foods and should be avoided at all costs.

7. Forget about "carbs"
The recent trend of demonizing carbohydrates has got to stop. They're not as bad as people think. Focus on whole grains and vegetables and fruits. These are all carbohydrate-rich foods, and all very helpful in promoting fat loss. Things to avoid are refined carbs. Basically, anything that's fake: white bread and bagels, refined sugar, most breakfast cereal and almost anything in the "snack" aisle. Also, be careful of packaged, dried fruit. Most of it has added HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP which instantly destroys any nutritional value the fruit may have provided.

8. Fish oil is your friend.
This is a tough one. This one is even tough for me. Fish oil comes in capsules now, so you don't have to taste it going down, but you will taste it throughout the day, and that's not fun. However, with that said, fish oil is a huge help in reducing body fat. And it's relatively inexpensive. Again, this will be a tough one to swallow (pun intended), but if you really want to get that six-pack, it will sure help.

9. Train your body with weights.
This should be obvious, but for some reason, it's overlooked. The average person feels that cardio alone will help promote fat loss. In fact, steady state cardiovascular work will put your body in a catabolic state, burn muscle as well as fat, and will increase your performance at running on a treadmill, or using a recumbent bike or elliptical machine, depending on what you're doing. By training your body with weights, you will increase your muscle density. Muscle tissue will burn calories at a rate that is roughly 70 times that of fat. Basically, the more muscle you have, the easier it will be to lose fat. Now, especially for the women, increasing muscle density is not the same as increasing muscle size. You will not look like "those women" on ESPN with all the rippling muscles. These women work very hard to look like that, and you will never look like them unless you absolutely want to, and train to that end. Bottom line, weight training is key to fat loss.

10. Don't follow the rules 100% of the time.
How will you ever make progress if you're miserable with your diet? If you love to drink blue slurpees and eat snickers bars, then don't eliminate them completely from your diet. Taking a break from time to time is actually a good thing. This doesn't give you license to start eating everything in sight or to order the 5-5-5 from Dominoes for yourself, but one day per week you can go a little nuts, just keep it under control. This serves two purposes. One, the diet will be easier to stick to when you can keep eating the foods you really enjoy from time to time. Two, your metabolism will get a nice kick-start and begin working overtime to move all those sugars and calories around that it isn't used to.

You're only as strong as you allow yourself to be...

I've gone from 315 to 290 over the past few months, but the last 10 pounds in the last month or so. By doing the following. Eating 5-6 meals a day ranging from 150-400 calories a meal. Eating more wheat bread, and whole grains altogether. Drinking water over anything else. If I order something to eat I get water.

Now I still drink 4-5 days a week, at least, and I drink heavy. But so far it hasn't had any ill effects other than my liver. But that's me, and that's what I enjoy. I'll find a way to workout/lose weight, and continue to enjoy alcohol and cigarettes.

I've also started walking/running 3 times a week for 30 minutes. I start with a 5 minute walk for warm up. Then I run at 5-6mph for as long as I can, then I cut it back down to about a 3mph walk, until I catch my breath, then repeat for 20 minutes. Then I walk the final 5 for cooldown. Hopefully after this week, I can step it up to 45 minutes.

Nothing is easy when it comes to losing weight and being happy with your lifestyle.

You're only as strong as you allow yourself to be...

Water and skim milk. The headaches are from caffiene withdrawal, been there done that. You don't necessarily haqve to give up caffiene while dieting, hell it's a major ingreadient in almost all fat loss supplements, but the sugar from cokes has gotta go. I drink black coffee in the am, and a diet mountain dew in the evening to get my fix. If you are set on dropping the caffiene keep your water intake up, and the headaches will subside in a couple days.

Yeah I have set the BEER down & Patron. But I will admit. The weekend just doesn't seem as fun now

Its like I am in trouble or something,

My doctor started me on that Wellbuetrin. Only been on it for 2 days. We will see if it helps on my temper.

So skim milk helps on losing weight. I drink nothing but whole milk since my 15 month old daughter drinks what seems like 2 gallons a week.

Man this diet shit SUCKS. WELL HELL GETTING OLD SUCKS.

Whole milk is VERY fattening, that's why growing baby's drink it. Start buying some skim for yourself, or just stick to water. Cleaning up your diet does suck, but you'll feel sooo much better in a couple weeks, and it gets easier to make the right choices as time goes on. You get to a point that you don't even crave the crap that you used to eat.

If caffiene is a concern, tea has more than coffee. If fat is the issue tea is fine without adding sugar.

sweet tea is evil... sugar.

cream in your coffee... evil.

get used to 0% milk

no alcohol! it sucks, but you gotta give it up.

caffeine is cool, coffee and tea are both calorie free!

coke zero is awesome for a quick fix.

you can't isolate fat loss. crunch all you want, you'll just have a 6 pack hiding under the spare tire. Ask me, I know

check my thread about the ARLi Tri-lean system, it's supposed to be the shit!

I have been constant on losing and have not given up beer. My main thing is, if I know im gonna drink that night, I throw in an extra 30 min of cardio or do more sprint intervals. Learn to love steel cut oats, whole grain brown rice and baked chicken and you will be good to go.

Which goes back to not being as concerned with lean mass or physical performance. The extra calories consumed is only part of the evil that is alcohol. Drinking also lowers natural test production, and is made up of empty calories that matebolize into sugar, and thus directly deposited as fat. The dip in test will affect both strenght and size in the long term. Ask me how I know.

Well I figure 3 shots of patron shouldn't hurt me to bad. But still get that buzz. Now if I can get past running more then a mile I will be ok.

You can always try out this diet. Beer Diet

If you are having trouble running a mile, try 30 sec. intervals for 30 min. 30 sec of running and 30 sec. of walking. You need to build up, because just running 1 mile is not gonna do much of anything.

I've posted up about my weight loss and weight gain (muscle mass, not fat), it's been a lot of fun and a I've done a lot of learning.

Jogging... man. It's gonna kick your ass at first I promise. However, the key is constant motion and heartrate. Get into a light jog, get your pulse up to 130 BPM, and keep going until you're blasted-ass winded tired. KEEP WALKING. Walk until un have your breath, repeat. give it 30 good minutes. When I first started jogging (which I don't do much of now, I'd rather bike), I would jog 1.5 miles solid, come back to my apartment and literally spend 15 minutes trying to not pass out. I can jog now until I am out of juice, my cardio is getting really good even carrying around the stupid scrap weight my tummy is giving me shit about dropping.

After some time, you'll be busting out 45 minute jogs, sweating your ass off, and feel like you could still do more... so you will cardio can be very addictive once you perfect your pace and Ipod selection

Well I wanted to report back.

I am now down to 214 lbs. Been pretty steady at that weight. I go from 214 to 220 now everyday. But before it was 220 to 225.

I have been running a mile everyday. I have given up all the cokes & Sweet Tea. I just drink Powerade & V8 Juice now & alot of water.

I have to admit. I FEEL LIKE I HAVE SO MUCH EVERGY NOW.

Its like my mood is better too. Not only am I starting to see my abs again. But I really feel alot better & seem to have a better attitude as a result of it.

I will post back next week on monday again.

As cliched as it is, you truly are what you eat. You put race gas in a car when you want optimal performance, and the body is no different.

It's alot easier to be relaxed when you feel good physically. No need to disrupt the flow.

Your attitude will improve much like mine did, simply because you feel so much better. Your brain is being fed well, also, since you are more than likely giving your body what it needs to produce the chemicals in normal form.

I strongly feel that my narcolepsy was made a lot worse due to poor eating habits. I have been doing very well lately after changing up my shitty diet.

Also, watch out for gatorade: it has carbs because it was designed to refuel your body during strenuous workout in a high-heat environment. If you are not running around, I wouldn't drink it. Stick with the flavored water... Crystal Light is your friend!!!

No, it has carbs because it tasted like shit without a crap ton of sugar in it.
