Weight Loss Competitions

I just found out that our office is having a competition that starts on Aug. 14... and goes for 12 weeks.

The last one they did went from April to July.
The winner lost 9.6% (201.25 to 181.75) and won $744.
Second place lost 7.8% (214.25 to 197.5) and got $446.
Third place lost 7.7% (194 to 179)and got $223.

I was 210 this morning, and I had already set a personal goal to get down to 190 or so in the next few months. That would be a 9.5% loss.

Do I try to pack on some poundage this week before the initial weigh in (215 to 190 would be 11.5%) or do I just hope no one will match the winning number from the last competiton?

I agree with the drinking water...eat alot as well. Remember...a gallon of water is a little more than 8lbs.

Don't try and pack the weight on untill the night before, or day of.

The day before you need to eat about 4 or 5 bananas and start drinking water. The day of you need to drink as much water as you can. that should put on anywhere from 10 to 20 lbs.

A gallon of water weighs 8.3lbs.

Load up right before weigh-in. Within a couple of hours you will piss out about 5lbs of it and over the course of a day, you'll have almost a 8.3lb weight loss!

On subsequent weigh-ins don't drink any fluid for about 12 hours before weigh-in.

I lost about 25 pounds in 12 weeks. I have since gained about 12 back but am pretty steady at that weight for months now.

Eat like a fucking pig between now and weigh in. Ice cream, cheesecake, donuts.... go for things with tons of fat. Just processed sugar won't really put the pounds on you like the fatty stuff will. At least it won't do it for me. Don't exercise either.

Then drink a bunch of water before weigh in.

After it starts, get in about an hour of cardio a day, eat no breakfast, then eat a salad for lunch. Don't eat much for dinner. Drink tons of water and protein above all else if possible.

Then laugh all the way to the bank.

Go to Cici's the night before. There is so much salt in the food that your body will retain a lot of water in addition to the water you drink.

I was thinking Winghouse. With some effort, I can put down a serious amount of wings.

Weigh ins will be every Tuesday. I think I can do it any time during the day, as long as at least one other competitor is there to witness. So next Tuesday, I will be probably be weighing in around 4pm.

I'll do weekly updates in this thread. That and the money will be my motivation. I know it's Monday night, but I'll start now. I was 210 when I got up this morning...

8/6/07 (end of day) - One week til first weigh in: 215.2

I think I could bulk up to about 15% and bloated pretty easily, and then lean down to sub 10% for the contest, using contest prep tricks to squeeze the water out for the last weigh in. Losing 25-30lbs to still be average doesn't look near as impresive as going from a slight belly to contest condition. Besides, there's nobody up here with near the nutrition knowlege and dietary willpower that I have.

Basically I've gotten lax in the last month or two, and I'm looking for an excuse to tightern the reigns again. It feels too damn good to eat/drink what I want...

First weigh in: 222.25

14 weeks to go.

My girlfriend talked me into running at least half of the White Rock with her in December, so this weekend I went to Run On and got some shoes that don't hurt the hell out of my feet. I pulled up a running plan that 01WC had posted in the past and I'm starting on it today.

Hell, man, you got 17 weeks. You can run the entire thing and impress the shit out of her!

Good luck.

I should be in the crowd of 3000+ people on December 9th. I want to run the Chevron Houston Marathon hard so I may use the Rock as a training run.

You follow the program and you'll be low 190s at the very least in 14 weeks.

Here's the program 01WC posted, that I will be following

Week: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Total (miles)
1: 3, 4, 3, 5, 15
2: 3, 4, 3, 6, 16
3: 3, 4, 3, 6, 17
4: 3, 5, 3, 8, 19
5: 3, 5, 3, 10, 21

8: 4, 6, 4, 14, 28
9: 4, 7, 4, 16, 31
10: 5, 8, 5, 16, 34
11: 5, 8, 5, 16, 34
12: 5, 8, 5, 18, 36
13: 5, 8, 5, 18, 36
14: 5, 8, 5, 9, 27
15: 3, 5, 3, 8, 19
16: 3, 3, walk 3, marathon, 35.2

If you cannot run 30 minutes straight at the beginning, start by jogging 5 minutes, walk 5 minutes, repeat for 30 minutes. Increase your jogs by 5 minutes per week until you are running the entire 30 minutes.

There ya' go. I'm not saying you would set a world record in the Marathon but you would be able to run the entire 26.2 miles without walking.

I did my first run at 6am this morning. God, I suck.

I really need to concentrate on my breathing. I've got a nicely deviated septum and some other nose problems. (My ENT has told me that my nose works at about 50% and that i should consider surgery ) ... so breathing in through my nose I still sometimes feel like I'm being choked off.

I'm starting with the 30 min. of 5 min. run / 5 min. walk intervals. Did a little over two miles and seriously ran out of gas at the end.
I don't want to eat breakfast before running, but I feel like I need some sort of energy in the morning My 300 cal. dinner last night just didnt hold me through the night and the run. What are some light, energy rich early morning snacks that could help me with this?

But, about 10 minutes after I was done I felt fucking great and I've had a lot more energy throughout the day, so onward and upward I will go.

14 weeks 'til the final weigh in and 17 weeks til the long run.

Second weigh in: 215.5
Percent lost: 3.037%

Waiting for the official spreadsheet to be emailed so I can see where I stand in relation to others.

Still lifting as usual, working on the running, and keeping the food intake in check.
Average daily intake since last weigh in:
Calories - 1999
Protein - 167.8g
Carbs - 191.5g
Fat - 54.1
Average % split - 40.8 / 46 / 13.12

LOL, yeah 7 lbs per week would be a bit extreme.

I took some of Al's advice, however unhealthy it may have been, and went nuts for a few days before the initial weigh in, then went with 01WC's advice for the day of and tried to go heavy on the water... the guy running the competition caught me early in the morning though, before I could get in a full gallon.

When I found out about the competition I was at 210 (right out of the shower). This morning I was at 211, so all of that 6.75 lbs was from the shit i packed on trying to sandbag.

But it did give me a 3.04% headstart on the competition

Sounds like you've given yourself quite the leg up. Hopefully you can keep it for the entire competition. If not, here's more motivation: if you don't win, I don't take pics of the scenery here.

No no, not "caught" like that.

I mean he just stopped me in the hall early in the morning and asked me if I had time to weigh in. I was planning on weighing in later in the day after eating lunch and drinking more water... but he inadvertently cut my plan short.

Total percent lost: 3.71%

Still lifting... and the running still sucks.
I haven't gotten to the point that I can follow 01WC's running schedule yet I'm doing intervals right now and going longer every day, working on getting to the point that I can do 3 miles nonstop. Until 2 weeks ago, I hadn't run like this in 6 years.
I started last week doing intervals of 2 min running and 1 min walking. 21 min total the first day, 24 the next, then 27 and 30.
This week I am doing 3:1 intervals for 20, 24, and 28 min. Saturday I will be in Austin and I will walk down to Town Lake and see if I have worked up to the 3 miles (haven't tried yet).
Running first thing in the morning, I've been having a problem with running out of gas.

Weekly Averages
Calories - 2162g.

Protein - 168.8g.
Carbs - 201.2g.
Fat - 49.8g.

Average % split - 40.2 / 47.9 / 11.8

12 weeks remaining. If I stay steady at -1.5 lbs per week, it will put me in around 196 lbs and 11.8% lost.

We had a challenge at our Church. Who could lose the most wieght in a month, and by not taking any cheaters.

I started at 193LBS August 1 and was at 174LBS last night.

I will not win as much money, but hope to take what I can. I hope to get to 170 by Friday.

I also still eat every meal just got real serious about snacks to make it like 5-6 small meals a day.

And Running and still working out.

Good luck on your program.

You are doing it right. With my daughter (11), when she decided she wanted to start running, I started her with walking 30 minutes 4x a week.

Each week I'd replace 5 minutes of her walking with 5 minutes of running. The first week she did 5 minutes running, 10 minutes walking, 5 minutes running, 10 minutes walking.

The next week she did 10 minutes running, 5 minutes walking, 10 minutes running, 5 minutes walking.

The next week she did 15 minutes running, 15 minutes walking.

The next week she did 20 minutes running, 10 minutes walking.

The next week she did 25 minutes running, 5 minutes walking.

By the 6th week she ran a 5K with me.

Also don't worry too much about speed. Right now its about time on your feet. You can worry about speeding it up later. Just keep on your feet and keep them moving. Eventually your capillary system will start to expand and running becomes easier and easier as you can get more oxygen to your legs.

My 401K is now a 400K (was 301K)

Long time without an update...

I took on some new projects at work and have been traveling a shitload. I was on the road 5 days last week, 3 days the week before that, I will be gone a total of 3 days this week, etc.
Not being able to keep a consistant running/lifting schedule, as well as not being able to eat what I want, when I want SUCKS.

I will be taking my running shoes with me everywhere I travel now. At a minimum I could just run laps around the hotels.

I weighed in this week at 212.5
Total loss = 4.39%

Currently I am in 3rd place.

1st place: 6.67% - 217.5 to 203
2nd place: 6.38% - 235.25 to 220.25
3rd place: - 4.39% - 222.25 to 212
4th place: 4.31% - 214.5 to 205.25

9 weeks remaining.

Shit, I am losing weight so fast now that I think something is wrong. I was at 220 last November. I am down to about 170 now, maybe less. Dropped two pants sizes. I have to buy new freaking belts!

I drink beer ALL the time, eat ALL the time, 420 just for the munchies so I can stuff myself with fried foods and junk food, avoid exercise, sleep whenever possible, and I can't stop losing weight! At this rate I'll be at 150 by years end!

Not being able to keep a consistant running/lifting schedule, as well as not being able to eat what I want, when I want SUCKS.
go buy a 5.5lb tub of whey protein and start supping your 2nd and 4th meals with it. 2 scoops with water.

buy a box of fiber one cereal, and do that for breakfast. sandwich lunch, dinner right after your running. strap those calories down TIGHT to 1900-2000 and get to it!

Got the weekly standings. I am still in 3rd place.

1st place: 7.93% - 217.5 to 200.25
2nd place: 6.38% - 235.25 to 220.25
3rd place: - 5.4% - 222.25 to 210.25
4th place: 4.08% - 214.5 to 205.75

The guy in second place has been steady for 3 weeks now, which is exactly what he did last time. It would be nice if he would put some back on like last time also. If that happens I, hopefully, will be in second place in a couple weeks.

I need to lose 2.25 lbs more to be at the percent he is at now... and 5.75 lbs to get ahead of the leader at this point.

Then you need to start drinking more beer now.

The pounds will melt away. It is more amazing than the adkins diet.

I never in my life thought that I would be called "skinny" at 200+ lbs. (I must have a fucked up chest to waist ratio ). Even 34" jeans have some room in them... and I still can't win this shit There will be a hard workout followed by a long bike ride this evening.

I've been called skinny at 215lbs. Working out with a gorilla is pure hell on self esteem.

Placement aside, that still awesome progress man.

Try this a couple times prior to the last weigh in in a smaller amount (trial runs) to fuck with their heads...Sauna your ass off the night before (1 hour in, 1 out, 1 in, 1 out), don't drink more than a quart of water 24 hours prior to weigh in, don't eat and maybe even take some extra fiber in to ensure a good bowel movement. You could easily shed 7-11 pounds in less than a day with ease
