Supplements for the wife? Women, need your input

My wife feels 'left out' I suppose - I take an energy drink (mainly caffeine) and whey protein. She thinks she needs something to aid her with her workout.

She is mainly trying to tone, which I told her is done with cardio and diet for the most part...but wouldn't mind adding a little bit of lean muscle as well.

What's a good woman's supplement for energy/toning and lean muscle growth?

Do you recommend protein if you are not trying to build mass?
What else?

She is caffeine sensitive, and would prefer NOT to take anything with excessive caffeine. She looked at NV and TrimSpa for energy/weight loss, but didn't want the caffeine.

How about the Caffeine free hydroxycut?

For the record, she's not in bad shape as it is - she is about 5'5" 120lbs, fairly proportionate... but you know how women are..."I'm fat!"

Whatever...
I told her to stop working out because she is starting to lose some of her god-given attributes that I happen to like, and I don't want to have to buy her a set...

oxandrolone 5-10mg daily. No, it wont cause hirsutism or virilization at that dose.

She probably wont be interested in anabolics...but thanks for the info.

BTW, IIRC, I think I may have posted back/forth with you regarding her PA school/career choice. You're a doctor, correct? Used to reside in S.A.?

Thanks again for the info.

She is still trying to get into the PA program here in S.A.

Unfortunately, on her first 'attempt' at applying, CASPA (the application program) had a problem with part of her supplemental application. In short, only part of her application was sent in, and she wasn't notified of it until it was too late (go figure). So, she was obviously denied because her application was incomplete.

She's applying at TX Tech's program this time, as well as UNT and UTHSCSA...so 3 attempts should give her a better shot at one of them, at least.

Protein is good for anyone.

My woman is addicted to my NO Explode Blue Rasberry.
I think that with a protein shake would be a good start for your wifey.

NO Explode expands your veins, but how about your blood pressure? Any ideas?

She's got a heart condition (don't remember what it's called), where her hear will 'race'. That's why she is supposed to lay off of Caffeine in large doses....Im a little worried about expanding her vascular system and the side effects it may have.

You might stay away from that then. I'd stay away from all the diet pills also.
NO Explode makes both of our hearts race.

Try a good recovery drink for her with protein and amino acids for after workouts....

That's what I'm thinking...maybe a protein shake prior to workouts and/or a recovery drink after.

She really doesn't need to do much, if anything, just seems to think she does. I can't get it through her head for whatever reason! At most, add a little muscle...but that would add weight and drive her nuts. Damn women! lol

She wants a better stomach. I told her the only way she will get much more definition is if she does some weight training to build the muscles. All she does at the gym is cardio (elliptical, treadmill, some bike, and some stairs). I think if she did a lot more crunches, leg lifts, bicycle kicks, and situps, she'd build her abdominals and her stomach would look more definited because there would be larger muscles to show. Right now, it looks fine for me...but she's unhappy with it. Again, this would likely increase weight due to added muscle. I guess she'll just have to get over the numbers and go by the mirror.

Same goes for the arms...a little weight training and she should be golden, but not too much or she'll add bulk (which she doesn't want). She should get some high rep/low resistance from the elliptical machine.

Her legs should get their definition from the cardio she does also...but a little weight training via squats and lunges would be the most beneficial for her backside, right?

What's the best way to convince a woman that she isn't fat? lol...lost cause!

Abs are built in the kitchen, not in the gym. For a tighter midsection she needs to be doing crunches, leg lifts, etc., but more importantly she needs to focus on her diet and cardio regimen. You can have toned abs and still not see them if the bodyfat is too high. I'm not saying that she is fat, it doesn't take much to cover them up.

Abs are built in the gym, and found in the kitchen...

You can have strong abs (like myself), but not be able to see them if you cover them up with pizza

I'll see if we can find her a protein/recovery shake that she likes the flavor of.

I also think she needs to change her diet around to several smaller meals. She's a nurse. Although she works 7am-3pm, during that time, her schedule can get hectic and prevent her from sitting down to eat when needed. A lot of times she'll have to skip lunch and what not, and she probably compensates at dinner. If she took small 'snack' meals and a shake, it may be easier on her and better.

Thanks for the compliments, BTW.

You contradicted yourself. By going to bed hungry, you are focusing on your diet, i.e. the kitchen.

I think she needs to supplement with a 43-year old triathlete.

She looks fine. I'd say keep a clean diet and she wouldn't need to supplement with anything depending on what she wants to accomplish.

I wouldn'd change anything, but if she wanted to do amything at all, I would take a really good look at her diet and get more strict on that. Cut out any "bad" stuff. That should make a difference.

Maybe do some interval training (HIIT) instead of so much straight long winded aerobic.

I bet it wouldn't take much to make whatever changes she is wanting.

That's just it though, as lean as she is, it's gong to be that much harder to tighten up further. IMO losing the first 20lbs is far easier than the last 5. She needs to tighten up the diet, and get that cardio 4-5 days a week. The "long-winded" kids, as you put it, is what burns fat.

What I meant by that was it will also pull from your protein stores so it will burn fat for the 1/2 hour or so that you are doing the exercise, and possibly for an hour and a half or so afterwards, but it will also sacrifice muscle which will decrease the amount of fat you burn in the other 23 1/2 hours of the day.

Muscle takes a certain number of calories a day just to maintain it. And long winded cardio longer than about 20 minutes wil deplete your immediate energy stores and begin to break down fat and protein to keep you going. At least that is what I read recently. anyway, it went on to say that people who were studied that did cardio in that manner lost fat but also lost muscle, while people that did interval higher intensity training instead lost the fat but did not loose the muscle.

But there are so many opinions out there that it is hard to know which one to trust since no one has time to try all of them.

I say that it would be easy for her to make the progress she wants because she appears to be in a condition that she should not need much at all to get where she wants to be, so changing something small might be enough to make that difference fo her. Tweaking her current diet just a little and/or a change in her workouts (the body thrives on change like this) might be plenty to make the small change necessary to take her where she wants to be.
