No need to diet AND exercise to lose weight?

Just thought you guys might find this interesting. It goes back to the age old calories in < calories out.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study debunks the widely held belief that diet plus exercise is the most effective way to lose weight. Researchers report that dieting alone is just as effective as dieting plus exercise.

"For weight loss to occur, an individual needs to maintain a difference between the number of calories they consume everyday and the number of calories they burn through metabolism and physical activity," Dr. Leanne Redman of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, explains in a press release.

There's nothing really new about that...just reiterates the point that Americans are by and large fat, lazy people...

It is obvious to healthy people but many people think they HAVE to workout in order to loose weight.

I agree and the article says that as well for other health reasons but the point of the article is that excersize and dieting is not the ONLY way to loose weight.

And someone actually funded this study? Well no shit.

You mean that if I intake less calories than I expend I can... well... lose weight? Wow.

You can lose weight without exercise but it isn't more effective than with exercise.

Using basic numbers:

Calories Intake - Calories Expended = Net Calories

If I sit on my ass all day, I might use 2200 calories, breathing and shitting.

If I add an hour of running in there, I might use 2800 calories, breathing and shitting and running.

I go on a 1800 calorie a day diet (which isn't really good since just breathing and shitting I use up 2200 so some of my weight loss will be lean tissue).

1800 - 2200 = -400 calories
1800 - 2800 = -1000 calories

I will lose 150% faster by adding running to my weight loss program. Not sure how they categorize effective but, being a math guy... I'm going to say adding exercise will help you lose weight faster and the weight you lose will be more of the "bad weight" and less of the "good weight."

Stupid ass researcher looking to get his name in print.

Thirty-five overweight but otherwise healthy adults -- 16 men and 19 women -- completed the 6-month study. Twelve were assigned to a diet-only group; they reduced their calorie intake by 25 percent. Twelve were assigned to diet plus exercise; they reduced their calorie intake by 12.5 percent and increased their exercise by 12.5 percent. The remaining 11 subjects made no significant diet or exercise changes.
Excersize does make it easier you can reduce your caloric intake by 25% or reduce it by 12.5% and add 12.5% increased excercise and according to the study it will net you the same results.

And the weight you lose will be of the good variety, not lean mass. Exercise will help keep your lean mass while you are losing weight.
