2 best ways to build upper body strength, Lots and lots of push ups, and pull ups.

If you want to use weights then do

Bench press
Curls
Lat Pull downs.

That's the main thing mu gunny sgt. had me do when i was getting ready for marine bootcamp.

You don't have to do pullups for the AF BMT pt test. I don't know how they test now, but when I was in basic in aug/sept '03, we had to run two miles in under 16 minutes and times situps and pushups. Just keep running a couple of miles 3-4 times per week and do a bunch of sit ups, pushups, leg lifts, bicycles, etc. You'll get in to shape in BMT, believe me on that one.

He just wanted to know what he could do to get into better shape and to build some upper body strength. Pull ups aren't a part of the AF Intial Strength Test but they are a great way to build upper body strength.

Also forgot to mention, if you want some core excercises then also do sit ups, crunches, and flutter kicks as well.
