When I was at my highest weight (278lbs) on my 5ft 6in frame I'm sure I was well above 30% bodyfat. When I weighed in several months ago and got my measurements I was at 224lbs and 24% bodyfat. I'll be getting another round of measurements this week so I can see where I'm at on my bodyfat. I'm hoping for 20% or less.

His math doesn't jive at all. At 178lbs/7%bf he says he was his strongest, with a 280 pound bench, and a 415lb, yet he had the lowest lean mass of all the measurements. At 210lbs/15%bf (I'm also 5'10") I didn't look quite that blubbery, and I was benching 360lb+. I'm not at all doubting his progress, the pics show it all, but his bodyfat measurements are a bit off. Calipers aren't the best, and they're only as accurate as the person using them.

6' 0" and 168 lbs, and the 7.5% body fat number. Decent definition with my small bones.

I just started this week with muscle building workouts. I have been doing slow
burn workouts at home for a couple of months, and now I'm looking to get into
some muscle building.

The LA Fitness trainer did my body fat measurment with the electronic hand grip
tester.
They are trying to sell me into a personal training program for some decent sized
money. I have a lot to learn, but at the cost of about $34 per session and 6-8 sessions
per month, it gets steep for the wallet.

I wish I knew someone who I could workout with and pick up some good info for
newbies.

After talking with a friend and telling him what I was doing just at the house, he
said I was doing everything wrong
I think my bod will respond well if I could figure out how to do the muscle building
properly.

Yeah some of his pictures and % looked different than what I look like too. He kinda trys to explain it if you read some of his quotes that he carrys more fat around his stomach or some-such. I think unless your dunked most estimates are just that.

When I trimmed my weight down before starting to exercise, the last area of fat
was at my love handles.

It's also the first place it gets put on. That's how I can tell if I'm starting to put on
some fat.

I was formerly at 153 lbs, then I started to exercise. Now I'm 15 lbs heavier and
7.5% fat. I would assume that it's about 13 lbs of muscle mass.

180 is where I'd like to be and still under 10% BF if possible. Try to get "swoll-up"
a little bit

I am 6'1" and weigh in around 185 now.

About 6 months ago I was 170lbs and around 8% body fat. (Pinch Caliper Test) I was dieting and working out hard core. I had a good cut build for being a skinny tall guy.

I am sure at my 185 I am a little more fat now. I can only blame my beer intake. I am back to playing Hockey and soccer though, so I hope to trim down a bit. I broke a rib and haven't been able to lift for over a month I just need more cardio and e few less beers

The most common and most easily accessed methods are caliper tested (what the guy in the link did) and an electrical impedence scale. As mentioned before, caliper testing has a pretty wide margin for error, due to both the process, and human error. On a medical grade scale, electrical impedence can be fairly accurate, but the Walmart scale that you'd have access to isn't so great. The supplement shop next to my gym has this thing called the "bod bod" that measures bodyfat in a similar way to the dunk tank, but it uses the displacement of air instead of water to take measurements. I'd assume that it's pretty accurate (sure aint cheap), but I don't know much more about it.

Personally...who gives a sh*t???
The way I look at it, it's kinda like maxing out on bench press....strictly for bragging rights!
It's all about how you feel about yourself and how you look in the mirror/to others!

I agree to a point, and totally disagree. Measuring bodyfat and max lifts are good way to measure progress, can be a source of motivation, and are also helpful in setting short-term and long-term goals. The really succesful people in the fitness industry micro-manage every aspect of their physical condition and food intake, and adjust their training and diet quite often. You don't know what to adjust or how much if you don't know where you started. Even the amateur entusiast isn't gonna hammer his or her body in the gym or on the track, day after day, with only the mirror and their daily self-affirmation.

I personally get on the scale and max out alot less often than I have in years past, but that's because changes come so much slower. It's still good to know that I'm still moving in a positive direction.

Dude, quit sounding like an old fart! (You're about the same age as me!)
haha
I have changed my body type/structure DRAMASTICALLY and haven't reached my plateau yet.
How I measure is size/ structure / and strength(not none of this one rep max BS).
Keep going up in weight and up in reps...this is how I find myself putting on MASS!
The scale is useless to me with the way I eat (10-12lbs of food a day).
I take a dump and lose 3-4 lbs, hahaha!
Anyways, I'm off work and hittin my casa for the weights.
Good luck...btw...Where the hell is WL at anyways?
Don't tell me he gave up his diet again???

Btw: I dont micro-manage jack, I don't shoot, therefore I CANT compete!

That's works for you and that's great, but not everyone thinks the way you do. We have personal trainers because not everybody sees the common sense things that you do, nor do they have the experience that you do.

I checked my BF again.

After a solid week of eating double my normal amounts, my BF reading has dropped
to 7.2% .

I've got to eat another 500-1000calories a day. That will put me at 4000-4500calories a day. I feel like I'm eating like a pig

Holy Cow Batman! I could never eat that much in a day. I know I have been doing poorly on my diet...eating around 1500 calories a day....and seeing every bit of it on my waist..... I'm back on my 900 calories a day diet and working out hard. Thanks for the jolt I needed to get my ass in gear again!

900 calories???
WTF???
I think each one of my meals consists of 900 calories!
You must be a freaken walkin twig!

I never really sat down and watched my caloric intake, but considering I eat at least 10 lbs of food a day...
10 lbs x 16 ounces = 160 ounces a day
160 ounces x 28 grams = 4,480 grams of food a day
4,480 grams x minimum of 4 calories per gram(4/4/9 rule) = 17,000+ calories per day (holy sh*t)!!!

RAVEN please chime in and tell me I am doing something incorrect here(Only think I can think of is empty calories/grams)
No wonder I have gained 13 lbs in 3-4 weeks!!!

I planning on starting my cutting phase once the 255 lb goal is achieved...man I feel like a HIPPO!

You're first problem is right here:

Quote:
I never really sat down and watched my caloric intake
Guessing at your daily intake is a sure fire way to end up really fat, or not maximize your gains. Writing everything down is the only way to know exactly how many calories you are taking in, at what time, and from what sources. Sounds like you're making sure that protein is covered, but if you don't watch everything, you'll end up being 255lbs of blubber. It is impossible to gain 13lbs of lean mass in 4 weeks, so what isn't muscle is water and fat.

I stopped drinking the other day and started gaining weight FAST! I was down to 175, I expect to be at 250 in a few months if i don't stop eating, LOL!

I think it has something to do with liver enzyme function. I was at a point where I could kill two 30 packs of cheap beer in a day and still get up the next day. I blew a breathalyzer of .62 for a local po-po freind. He said it was obviously wrong. I showed him the empties and we did it a few more times. It dropped to .61

Beer can help you lose weight without any exercise at all.

I hear that under 6% is unhealthy unless you're eating practically all the time. Your body needs SOME fat.

I've been eatting right at 4000 calories a day for the last 6+ months. I was in a nutrition class my last semester of undergraduate and had to do a nutrition analysis.

Basically, put in age, sex, activity, etc... and had to keep track of EVERYTHING we ate for 3 days. I ate normally (apparently some people change their habits just to see how the program acts), was supposed to be eating like 3300 calories and was putting in just over 4k. The good thing was my fat consumption was low, the bad thing was my carbs were WAY too low because I was eating too much protein.

I'm trying to back down to about 2500 calories per day, but I have to tell you it sucks because I drink probably ~1000 calories in O.J. and milk per day, hahaha.
