What to eat before working out?

I keep reading that you should eat carbs before you work out (like oatmeal for breakfast) but I see most of you guys loading up on protein in the AM. What the best stuff to eat before you workout to give you energy?

I workout during my lunch hour, around 1-2pm. I usually eat around 12-12:15ish and it will consist of something healthy like a chicken breast with swiss cheese with 2 veggies. Sometimes a chicken sandwich. After my workout I drink a protien shake.

If you are trying to build muscle then eat carbs like oatmeal to give you energy and throw some protein in with it. Then do the same thing right after lifting.

If you are trying to lose weight then low-intensity cardio is best on an empty stomach.

keep in mind. if you Eat, blood rushes to your stomach to help with digestion. most people digestive cycle is 3ish hours. So if you eat... you arent at 100% lifting or cardio for a few hours.

I've read that you don't want to eat jsut before lifting because of blood working on the digestion, but that some people can handle that ok with no issues.

Also, if you do cardio in the morning early, you are supposed to be way better off eating some carbs and Protein as in a breakfast so that you can stop the catabolism that is happening from your night. you should run through that pretty fast doing cardio and be able to burn more calories than you took in.... provided you didnt' eat some real crap just then.

What time do you do this cardio in relation to when you wake up?

best thing to do is to eat after you excerise, you burn calories alot quicker right after you excerise because your metabolism is still going..

grilled chicken mixed with mixed veggies is a good protein/veggie source to keep your fuel burning and going in your body..

fiber, milk, water, and protein is your best friend!! keep that in mind.. top source of losing weight and staying in shape!

I will get up at 5:00am and start cardio between 6-6:30am. I am never hungry right when I wake up, so I haven't been eating... I just thought I was suppose to. I guess I have been doing good then, lol. If anything, I'll have a cup of coffee before the workout and that's usually it.

Thanks for all the information guys (and girls) . Looks like I'm on the right track......

I'm a competitive runner around here and b4 race days for dinner i eat alot of carbs (pasta's and stuff) but race morning you dont want all that stuff sitting in your stomach so we usualy eat light like a bagel or banana. It usualy hits the spot and wrks pretty good for the race.

Seriously that's like 340 calories, with 27g of sugar, not a bit of fiber, and 11g of weak protien.

You should try something better than that before you work out. Empty dead calories, probably not a good idea

I drink a shake consisting of whey protein, carbo gain(maltodextrin), and creatine. If I'm tired I sometimes take 2 aspirin-caffeine tablets.
