Working out twice a day

Is that bad for you for just a short period of time? I've gained like 5 lbs from all this damn holiday eating, so I'm wanting to double up on my workouts. What are the pros/cons to working out twice a day? And what I'm usually doing is cardio (30-45 min) in the AM and then cardio (20-30 min) and weights in the PM.

I wouldnt think it would be bad. Sounds like it would be good if anything. I have heard that working out first thing in the am is best.. Only thing I have heard bad about working out in the evening is that you might not sleep as well.

It's only bad if your body can't handle it.

In a *previous* lifetime, before I got old, married and had kids and realized the importance of beer everyday, I ran triathlons.

5am swimming, 90 minutes total time anywhere from 3000-4000 yds total.
Running 3 days a week after swimming. 2 days at the track at night.
Biking 4-5 days a week, with a 60-100 mile ride on Sundays.

All in all about 40-60 miles running a week, 250-300 miles on the bike and 1000s of yards in the pool.

My resting pulse would never get over 40 beats. I never burnt out and I also worked full time.

Now, if I tried that, I'd be overtrained in 5 days!

Check your pulse in the morning, before you get out of bed. If you start seeing a marked rise in the pulse over a few days, cut back. Also, other signs are irritability, restlessness at night (can't get to sleep), decrease in appetite (amazingly!)

But, unless you are fully out of shape or 50 years old and never worked out before, your routine isn't going to hurt you.

My 401K is now a 400K (was 301K)

I usually try to work out twice a day. Cardio in the morning and weights in the afternoon. It has worked well for me.

What does your resting pulse have to do with anything? What effects does it have?

I wouldnt be too concerned with cardio. as far as weight, I would imagine as long as you dont workout the same stuff in the same day.. general rule is 48hours b/w work outs (same muscle group).

sounds like that isnt an issue for you tho. Diet is the most important thing- track your calories, you will be surprised!

General rule is the lower your resting heart rate the healthier you are.
