Shut up! Your a fuckin hoss.
Hey, on good note. I just learned how to do dead lifts a couple weeks ago. I hit 225 today and almost killed myself. My lower back is weak right now. Fells good to learn something new though.
NO other workout wares me out more than the dead lifts! I do the straight leg off a box....

I'm not BSing. I did a slow set, got six reps before failure, and racked 'em. I finished up with three more sets on the pec dec to get my mind off the weight and back on form.

Deadlifts are great for overall mass. Kinda like squats, deadlifts are a multi-muscle involved lift that really get blood flowing and testosterone moving. Carefull with that lower back though Greg, you can really mees things up if you try to go too heavy too soon.

Are you serious about the 225 almost killing you? Im guessing you're being sarcastic but i dont really know you guys so i cant take your word for it. I remember at a powerlifting meet a guy was opening at 805 in deadlift in the 198lb weight class.

He's just getting into doing them regularly so it'll take some time to get his body ready to go heavy. I agree that 225 is light for deadlifts, but until his lowerback is conditioned better, it would be stupid to pile on weight and risk seriously injuring himself. As for him "killing himself" weight has little to do with it if you are lifting intensly and for enough reps. 135 is a warm-up weight for bench, but if you were to do 4 slow sets of it to compete failure with perfect form your chest'll be pretty engorged with blood by the end. Also factor in the large muslces involved in deadlifting and that makes for an intersting leg day.

yeah I guess i can think back to the first time i did deadlift and how it felt awkward. What style do you lift btw man? I always had my feet outside my arms as wide as i could get them, toes pointing towards the plates. But i've seen people lift with their legs inside their arms which is a longer range of motion but works for some people.

a week off eating hamburgers and fries will generally yield better lifts than before the break assuming you haven't taken a break in a couple months

PS, I feel weak now

That's great bro. I'm going to do two more chest workouts w/ the dumbells then I'll go back to the barbell bench and see how much I've improved.

Different styles are right for different people. Every strength coach I've had said it doesn't matter which style you chose as long as its whats right for you. Some people can actually do more with close leg deadlift. If you're trying to just build muscle for looks, then like whitelightning said keep your legs shoulder width, but if you're in competitve lifting Its better to chose which style is easier for you.

I just switched back to heavy lifting today. I do flat bench with a bar but do the inclines and declines with dumbells. Today I did 3 sets of 8 with the 100's on incline 3 sets of 10 with the 85s on decline. I'll probably try a little more next time. I wish I wasn't so weak.

So, if i have my legs shoulder width apart should i ditch the box or still stand on it?? Also, do i slightly bent the knees or not??

I know, but it is not for 2 reasons: 1) I did it at the end of my workout so I was worn out, and 2) I injured my rotator cuff doing decline dumbells so I am trying to stay light and use proper form. I'm sure that I could do considerably more, but at this point it is not worth it.

I am not at ALL a fan of decline press. if i do it i stick to the hammer strength decline press machine. i seldom decline.. i normaly stick to doing 5 sets on bench.. ( 2 warm up... 3 work sets of 15-8 reps) and then 3 sets of incline dumbell press with the 150s as my mass movement. and pec dec or cross overs for my high rep movements..

white lightning,
i wanna do the shoulder width dead lifts next back day. So i dont use a box and i have a similar motion just with my legs apart? Do i slightly bent my knees or not?

oh, and decline is my favorite chest exercise.

are you talking about the Stiff legged DL? or Regular DL? look at the 2 animate images i posted.. Stiff legged is VERY VERY Bad for your lower back. but good for hamstrongs... Regular DL is a great over all mass builder.

If you wanna do Regular deadlift, and are trying to build a high max for competition, do what is comfortable and easier for you. But if you're going for leg mass and looks, keep your legs a lil past shoulder width and KEEP YOUR BACK STRAIGHT. The most common thing you see at PL meets is people finishing off with their back, and that tears up your back. As for using a box or not, I would recommend not using a box for regular deadlift.

are you serioulsy telling me this? Ive been to several lifting meets, And the only thing they watch for on dead lift is feet shifting, and hitching. Where you put your feet, and how you use your back doesn't matter a bit. Ill send you some videos of next PLing season.

you guys serioulsy need to look into what you're saying.

i have been to several lifts. your form doesnt have to be 100% strict. but if its Sloppy.. its a NO LIFT!!..
oh well... if you want to be known for sloppy lifts. thats fine with me. i preffer to move big weight. correct form and get big.. instead of moving shit weight.. in shit form and being puny.,

In USPF meets they don't care how you put your feet or arms or anything else. All they care about is hitching. You can use your back or legs or anything else. You also have to lock out at the top, and you have to straighten your back. You can't move your feet once you start the lift but hell that would be totally stupid anyway unless you want to hurt yourself.

<---used to be judge at meets.

Thanks AL P...its nice to know someone actually knows what a real meet is like.

And whitelightning...you verified something i said in attempt to make me look like a poor lifter. I said if you're going for size and appearance, do a formulaic deadlift, but if you want just a heavy lift, do whats easiest(not in those exact words however...sorry i had to translate for you). And btw in practice i do lift with correct form, but at meets my form goes to shit because it helps me get more weight.

I guess you are right.. i dont care about doing a single heavy lift.. i prefer to do lifts that build size and strength, and do them cleanly rather then any slopy shit just to get the weight up.. hell. i can only imaging what i could move if i stopped focusing on wanting to get bigger and stronger and focus on doing sloppy movments..

I just mentioned that in practice, i do strict form. But in a meet, i cut loose and work for the goal. Heavier weight.
