Making my own protein drink/shake

What are some decent recipes for making my own drinks/shakes?

How many of you do this? is it better to just buy something from the store?

Thank you!

Nick

Why reinvent the wheel?

How much of a background do you have in nutrition that would allow you to do better than the products in the store?

Can you make a 5 lb batch of your "mix" cheaper than $27?
How would it compare in nutrient value?

That wasn't even close to a flame.

He asked, so I posed a few counter questions to answer the "is it better to buy storebought".

My main question was : what's the best way to make my own?

I would like to know what's in it
I would like to save a few bucks (if I could)

Keep in mind I'm still a n00b to most of the this.

I'm just interested in making my own drink/shake.
I really didn't say anything about not adding products I find at the store, I'm just looking at options.

Let me know if you have a better idea

Thanks again
Nick

Hey Nick, don't mind him.. I think he got the wrong idea from your question. I believe you're asking for some recipes for different shakes, customized, such as the following:
12-16 oz green Gatorade
9-14 Strawberries
2 scoops of your favorite chocolate protein powder (decently low carb, but not a true "low" or "zero" carb)
1.5 Tsps of Peanut Butter
Mix all in a blender

I think he was thinking you were wanting to make your own protein powder, like you were going to try to market and sell it.

Yes, I misunderstood the question, my apologies. (And to answer the question of bad day, yes it was...but after a pretty severe cardio session I really don't remember much of it )

I use a scoop of the Vitamin Shoppe's house brand of "Whey Tech" (strawberry) mixed in with a cup of milk, 4-5 strawberries and/or a bananna for breakfast. I'll sometimes change it up with other fruit (Oranges and Kiwi kick ass).

Lately I've cut back to just one fruit at a time as it became quite heavy all at once.

if you have a juicer.. go get some veggies..

get some spinach, carrats, apples(core seeds everything) maybe some grapes, tomato, etc.

these are just some suggestions you can add or subtract which ever. (Spinach is your best source of protein so I would def. think about having that)
Now making a drink like this doesn't exactly look that appetising(sp).. but it will def. give you the energy that you need and the nutrtion that you need.

good luck!

All I have right now is a blender... so I'll come up with a few things, and maybe look into getting a juicer later on.

Thanks again everyone for all the replys.

Hope today is a better day for you Jedi

What they do at smoothie factory and smoothis king is get some frozen fruit in the packages and then blend them. granted them have all the different pouder mixs to put in there. but you can just throw some ice and fruit together and that is good too..

I need to stop by the drug store tonight and get some powder to use with my drink. I'm looking for something high in protein correct?
What would you guys recommend?

Thanks again for all the tips / advice

My bf drinks this one shake called body lean it is high in protein combined with muscle enhancing nutrients. It is designed to support muscle mass during times of intensive excercise such as weight lifting. Send me a pm if you need more info..

If you don't mind being a fat ass...

2 scoops of chocolate designer whey
1/2 cup of blue bell vanilla ice cream
cup of water
cup of skim milk

Tastes like a malt to me and so damn good I could drink a gallon of it. Got plenty of fat and calories though. That little bit of ice cream makes a hell of a good texture.

If you are trying to gain weight, hell load that bitch up. Throw in another scoop of powder, a banana, whatever. Just don't put too much sucrose in there. Hard to go wrong when trying to gain weight, just stay off the sugar.

Damn, now that is a hell of a post workout shake. What is your opinon on the human body only handling 40-50g/protein in a sitting? No dextrose?

y2kgirl01. Hey I never got that pic.

Before reading most of the replys saying hold off, I ended up going out and getting a mix "Pro Blend 55"
I went in and told the guy what I wanted to do, and asked what he would recommend. It was $17 and it's about 2lbs of it.

It doesn't taste bad at all, and works well with the malt idea

Calories: 270
Fat: 1.5G
Carb: 7G
Protein: 55G
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/hd/pro.html

lots of other stuff also, what is the main thing I'm looking for in this? Protien?

How should I use this stuff. Is it post work out? As a meal? with a meal?

Thanks again
Nick

Most of what was said earlier has too much sugar for me. Well everyone is different and has different goals but the best I have found for me is

1 pkg Lambrada Lean Body (chocolate or peanutbutter chocolate)
2 tbls natural peanut butter (I prefer smuckers)
package of plain instant oatmeal
16oz water (or when need more cals add fat free milk)
and if it is pre or post workout I add 2 tbls of honey

When I am leanin up I use Lean body low carb, water, 1tbls peanut butter and delete the oatmeal (unless pre or post workout)
I workout to look good, be lean, and strong. I don't workout to be a powerlifter so for some this may not be the way to go. Hope it helps
