whe is the best time?

To run? I hve heard that in some cases it is better to run in the morning then at night? what are your thoughts on this? my wife wants to start runing, and she was wondering about that. also, she is a smoker and knows she can't handle running a lot all at once....what is the best for this (ie run for a little bit then walk and alternate through the entire time)

Running in the morning boosts your metabolism for the day. Once you go to sleep, it slows down. That's why people that are trying to lose weight are advised to run in the morning.

If her goal is fat loss then jogging first thing in the morning is best, and the reasoning is two-fold. Like Z said, it raises your metabolism first thing in the a.m. and will help keep her burning calories all day long. Secondly she will be running after a 6-8 hour fast, with an empty stomach your body has no choice but to tap into fat stores for energy.

Doesn't it also burn a little muscle as well?

Cardio in any form can burn muscle, keep a close eye on your calories/macronutrient breakdown and it shouldn't be an issue unless you are running a few hours at a time.

If she is just starting she'll need to jog a bit and then walk a bit, stamina doesn't happen overnight. She needs to make a concious effort to jog a little farther/lomger each time she runs and eventually she'll be able to jog the entire distance or time that she is wanting to run.

thats what i was saying. she is going to start tomorrow, and we will see how it goes from there. she is starting with a mile (about that anyway, it takes about 20 minutes to walk and that is how long it takes me to walk 1 mile)

here main goal is to be able to loose weight. she weighs 140 right now, and wants to weigh 120. I think 120 is a healthy weight for her, as she is not a very big girl.
