Knee issue and running

I was about to start a running program but a few weeks ago I noticed the my left knee was popping when I walk, and I walk alot at work. It started out really lightly and almost not noticible but now it is alot louder and sometimes I can feel some discomfort after a day of being on it alot. If I do run at all I don't notice it doing it and I can also adjust my walk a little and it does not do it (sort of like keeping my stance lower a bit ?!?). I am concerned that there might be issues if I start running though, but I don't have insurance now so a DR visit with x-rays and such is not in the immediate picture.
I read somewhere that a popping in the knee as long as it was not associated with a pain is ok. anyone have any experience with anything similar?

I don't but if you are still wanting to work out your legs.. the BEST thing you can possible do is swim!!!! There are so many things you can do to work out just in the pool. Especially when you have knee problems.. Sorry, this probably didn't help you out

Not necessarily ok, any kind of "popping" in the knee joint means something isn't meshing properly.

Take a trip to a *real* running store, like Run On! and have them look at your stride and structure and suggest a shoe for you. It will make the world of difference.

When I first started really running a long time ago, I started out having really bad knee problems. When I'd buy shoes, I'd go to Oshmans and find the coolest pair to wear. I then went to a running only store and they fitted me with proper shoes, no more pain or clicks.

The pop may not be anything now, but it could end up costing you later in life.
