lay flat on the ground, put your hands on your tailbone, and lift your legs and upper body up and hold them about 6 inches off the ground for as long as you can.

yea, or you can lie flat on your back, put your shoulder at someones legs standing up, grab thier ankles, and put your legs straight up. the person standing up throws your legs toward the ground and you have to keep them from hitting the ground, then bring them back up. The person standing should also throw your legs to the side to work the sides of your stomach area.... alot of running helps too.

yea, to lose weight you have to attempt to lose it all over. doing ab exercises will only strengthen the muscles under the fat. you won't see them until you lose it all over. that takes alot of eating right and alot of exercising. cardio and light weight training.

how many reps do you need to do? my wife is looking for some ways to tone her stomach (that is the only spot on her body that has any fat besides her thighs but that is mostly muscle)

she used to do that for fun as a kid, but I never even knew that that would work to tone out the abs....

Usually I do 4 sets. Test yourself out first with how long you can last holding them up, then lower that time by about 40%. So if you can do it for 100 seconds, do 3 reps of 60, then on the last one hold it for as long as you can. If you can make the reps, then just hold it for as long as you can 3 times. Rest only 10-20 seconds in between.

yea, basically your holding the muscle in a semi-situp position, but they are getting worked differently because they are being held in thier contracted position. It works pretty well for me

If you want great abs, assuming you have a good diet, you need to hit them at more than one angle. Weighted crunches, leg lifts, reverse crunches, leg-up crunches, bycicle crunches, and side dumbbell lifts for the obliques.

Ab exercises are great for tightening up the muscles in your stomach, but they do very little to help burn bodyfat. Yo0u can have a rockin' set of abs, but with too much fat on top of them they will not be seen. Do your crunches, but work on your diet and get a bit of cardio as well. You could essentially not do a single sit up and still get a "6-pack" with a lean enough bodyfat.
