Can you have too much protein?

I am on an all protein diet and i was wondering if you can over do it?About 190 grams per day. I drink a ton of water but maybe not enough. Any Input?

No, your body stops digesting protein at a certain point.

your body can only take so much, you're not going to OD on the stuff or anything, but the ruling around is something like 30-40grams/ 2 hours is the max your body can digest. Personally I'm on a diet right now where I'm hitting up ~200 grams a day ( I weigh 178lbs. right now), but that is because of the diet I'm doing. If you space out the times that you eat then your body could take all of that in (ie. I'm eating 5-6 times a day to hit 200grams)

If you keep working hard then you will see gains, but nothing like when you first started. I've gained a ton of strength in the last 2 weeks on this diet, but eventually the gains should start to die down because of my own body's physical limitations

190g is a tad on the high side depending on your bodyweight, but not quite to "bad" levels. Eating too much, however, isn't beneficial to growth due to the body being able to process only so much, and the kidneys aren't too fond of filtering all of the extra protein.

I got two kidney stones a couple years ago because of eating to much protein, and Big Matt just had one for the same reason also. I wish I could tell you how much is to much. I don't know that I just know it can happen.

A lot of it depends on the rest of your diet, Nic. I've been over 200g a day for 12 months plus, and haven't had any problems.

general rule is 1 gram of protein per lb of body weight. So if you weigh 190...consume approximately 190 grams of protein a day in variation according to meals. Remember to eat several meals a day.

I remember the first time I saw my piss like that, I thought I could pee in the dark and see by it!

It also depends on the person. I was about 175 at the time I had the stones. I can eat alot more protein now. I was just letting him know he doesn't have a free pass on protein.

yeah, more water will tend to flush out the uric adic that builds up when on a high protein diet

I just got over some stones, and gout, and i base it all on high protien, spicy foods, etc. and not enough water, i'm trying to make a habit of drinking plenty of water now

also realize that your body absorbs protein from real food better than it does from powders... I believe that boiled egg whites offer the best bio-availability of protein...

you gotta realize, just because you're injesting 200g of protein, it doesn't mean your body is absorbing it... if you're blowing it out your ass and hammering your kidneys and pissing it out in a stream of neon fire, you're not "getting" 200g of protein...

most lifters at the amateur/hobyist level would probably make gains just as well (better?) if they consumed .5g/lb of protein from real food sources as they would 1g/lb from drinking shakes and eating bars IMO

Drinking too much water is hard on the kidneys as well. If you weigh 150 lbs, and you are ingesting 200+ grams of protein, then drinking 2 gallons of fluids (more than twice as much that you really need), expect some kidney failure.

average person....

like me, I am an ectomorph (tall and thin bone structure) can only metabolize 25-35 grams of protein in one sitting. like everyone said, space it out and drink about a gallon of water a day. I keep a gallon jug of water in the fridge and make it a goal to drink that all by the end of the day. of course if you sweat alot from say a cardio exercise, you may need to take in more water to replace what you depleted your body of.

your body will only process process around 60 grams per serving. anything else will be passed. You should geta blood work up if you decide to go hard core on the protien bro. It will cause your kidneys to have an elevated function. If you are healthy this may not be a problem, but if you are prone to kidney stone and kidney malfunctions you may have some problems down the road.

I also heard that if you take glutamine that your body will absorb more of the protein than normal. It also helps out in other ways like boosting the imune system. I've recently heard that if you want to gain weight (being as I am a skinny guy) I should be receiving 1.5g times my weight in protein while Im working out, but it may not be good for you for more than 3 mos. at a time.

I don't know for sure, like I said that is what I have been told.

I am far from being a protien junkie. I usually only take it on days that I work out (not as regularly as I should) and I always couple it with 5-10g of Glutamine (w/40g protien). I have never experienced the neon pee, nor any side affect of the protein. I do only take it once a day. Oh yeah, I also weigh 260lbs
