I don't really know what would be worse, alcohol makes some nice chemicals that screw with your muscles and soda makes your blood full of that horrible carbonic acid. I think it would depend on what you were doing after drinking either one. Beer would probably be worse if you were doing regular lifting (you could at least burn it out of your muscles if your doing cardio). Sodas are worse for cardio, because of the elevated pH in your blood, thus you breath harder under regular conditions.

Beer is definitely worse. They both metabolize as sugar, but the alcohol is a completely worthless calorie source that slows up your metabolism, promotes fat storage, and purges necessary water from your muscle cells.

The worse thing about *massive* beer consumption is that is inhibits protein synthesis. Part of the goal of weight training is to enhance protein synthesis, so, sucking down alcohol is counter-productive.

Having said that, anything you ingest to extremes is bad for you.

Moderation is the key, like everything else in life.

Beer is worse. Like Boost said, metabolizes as sugar and dehydrates you. It also slows your digestive tract way down.
I had a freind who ate dinner, went out drinking and puked seven hours after he ate, and it looked like he had eaten.

So your friend drank enough that he pukes his brains out it's the beer's fault? Sort of like someone shooting their head off, it's the gun's fault.

Nothing wrong and everything beneficial using a moderate amount of alcohol (2 beers for guys) a day.

My point was that alcohol inhibits digestion. Obviously 10 beers
would have more impact than 2 .

Beer inhibits protein digestion. But alcohol doesn't act as a sugar when in your body, thus it doesn't inhibit fat burning.

Soda also inhibits digestion as well. And if you drink a dark soda (like Coke), you most likely are also ingesting caffeine, which also inhibits digestion.

So its a wash.

Point being, regardless of what your friend drank, there was something else in his stomach. Downing 10 beers is not going to inhibit digestion enough to upchuck the exact contents of what was placed down the throat. My guess would be either bad food or a stomach virus.
