car audio guys...

i have a 2007 mustang with the shaker 500 system in it. I'm replacing the stock speakers with JL Audio 5x7's and JL Audio 8" subs in each door.

I want to (if possible) keep the stock head unit. But at the same time, I'm willing to replace it if it is worth the extra money. I like the double din setup just dont want to pay that much more if it's not needed.

Here's what I'm looking for answers to:

I have access to either a 300 watt, 4 channel amp and a 450 watt, 4 channel amp. Which one would be better in my case?

Also, recommendations as far as what I would need if I kept the stock head unit, or recommendations on replacing it.

Thanks!

Replace the head unit with a nice double din. I like Alpine, personally.

More power is better. Go 450 vs 300.

Which 8s are you getting? Which 5x7s?

I have a set of ZR800s that I still haven't installed in my ride, because it's going to require fiberglass work. I am jealous of the Mustangs with the spot for the 8 in the door.

Use sound deadening like crazy on your doors. When it seems like plenty, add more. It's not so much about rattles, but about eliminating flex in the panels, which robs energy that could have been more sound.

If it were mine, I'd install the ZR800 for dedicated midbass, and then add a real substage with a pair of 12s, or something similar. I don't see you getting true subs in the doors to sound good enough, but then again, I guess that depends on your opinion of "good enough".

unfortunately as a musician, i value my trunk space more than additional subs at this point lol. sometimes wish i would have gotten a truck to haul drums around.

my girlfriend's dad works for JL Audio and he's hooking me up. So not sure exactly what he's getting me but I'm sure its the good stuff.

I already knew I would have to dynomat the hell of those doors cause those stock subs rattle the shit out of the doors now! i like alpine and pioneer so it's close between those double dins

Go Alpine. As far as a subwoofer, look into a stealthbox by JL. Fits in little pocket off to the side of the trunk without taking a lot of space. That's if you do like to get a sub in future.

Yeah I've already been looking at that. Been going back and forth on the stealthbox. Maybe i should just bite the bullet and get the double din and the stealthbox.

I've got the Stealthbox in my 95 GT Convertible and it's awesome for what it is (a single 10" woofer). Well worth it IMO for something that still keeps the spare tire and takes up a minimal amount of space.

+1 on the Stealthbox, my buddies SS had a W3 that surprised the shit out of me! Also +1 for the Alpine head unit, Alpine and Eclipse are the cleanest I've heard/owned.
