Amp & Sub Question

Wanting to put a Sub & Amp in my daily driver. I have a mid size trunk. Its a stock Pontiac Bose System, But its actually pretty lame.

Wanting to buy a sub with the Box & amp? What type of sub & Amp do you suggest that wont overheat & I will still get good quality sound?

What brand & style box & brand Sub is good & nice bang for your buck. Going to try & find something used on craigslist. Just want to know what brand & type box to be shopping for on there

Does the stock system have a subwoofer? If so you can tap into it using an RCA adapter...

If not you'll also have to upgrade the head unit.

What's your budget? If you can find a used 12JLW3 powered by a used JL 500/1, it'll sound pretty damn good!

$400 is my budget for Sub & Amp & Box installed. I was looking at the JL Audio W7Sub. But man those are insane expensive!

lmao, you're looking way out of your price range if you're looking at the W7s. The sub alone runs more than that the last I checked. Then you have the box, amp, and as Brien mentioned, you'll likely have to buy a new head unit.

Not sure if the stock system has a Sub. If it does. The stock amp is blown then. Cause the stock system really isnt that great. The car is a 2001 Grand Prix GTP & my stock system in THE RAT hits way harder then in my GTP

Yeah I knew I was. I checked craigslist & I found a W7 with a box for $400 & that was with no amp or install

Yea, it could be a bit overkill for a basic system too, but if you have to cash it'll perform!

With that budget though, you'd be waaaay better off installing yourself.

There's some package deals on Craigslist, but I don't really have any experience with Kicker, Infinity, etc...

You don't have to upgrade your head unit even if your stock radio doesn't have a sub. Just go and buy a line inverter and tap into the rear speaker signal. It changes it from speaker wire to RCA jacks for any amp to plug into. That's what I had in my Mach and what I have in my 96 Cherokee. Around 20 bucks or so...

I've got an Alpine Type R 15 and I can only say good things about it. A ported box will generate some nice bass!

EW will be able to recommend an amp, I've no idea

Being able to tie into your stock head unit all depends on if your stock system has a subwoofer. If the stock system has a sub/amp, then you can tap into the wires using an RCA adapter and give that feed to your new amp.

If not then you must have a new head unit installed.

I did some googling and found a lot of GTP with bose stereos, but no one is elaborating on if it includes a stock sub.

this ^^^ just tap into the rear speaker wires on the rear package tray, also i think you would probably benefit from upgrading the door speakers as much as a sub....

He can get a line level converter to get signal to the amp from one of his rear speakers.

What kinda music do you primarily listen to Seb?

100.3 Jack
95.5 Wolf
106.1
93.3
92.5
97.1

But most of the time its on 106.1 or 100.3 & if one of the girls are with me they both like country as do I also. Just not as much as they do.

I dont want my base to over tone the words in the song if that makes sense.

I'd probably recommend going with a sealed box on your music tastes for sound quality (SQ), rather a ported enclosure that will generate lots of bass (SPL).

Could I just go with a 10inch sub in a ported box or do you think that will be to much base!

I've got an enclosed 10" in the extended-cab of my truck (no obstruction to the ears) that is about right in most cases, but distorts on some of the really low stuff. Given that yours will be filtered through the back seat, you will be losing alot of volume AND sound quality, so I don't think that a single 10' would cut it.

My 328i stock system has an 8' woofer under each of the front seats which is plenty in terms of quality and volume, but even worse than the 10" when I turn up the "bassy" stuff.

Having bass in the trunk to me seems like a super inefficient way to get there, unless you are able to add a port hole to the package tray. On your budget though, I wouldn't expect a competition quality sound.

I called a guy about two Apline Type R 12inch Subs with a custom Ported Box for $200, He wants $260 with the box. Then I just need to get a Amp & the material to wire it up to my stock head unit.

Also is there a way to hook my IPOD up to my stock head unit?

If there's a line-in (headphone type jack) on the head unit you can get a male to male connector at any Radio Shack or the like for cheap. If not the only other way is to buy an RF modulator that plugs into your Ipod, and puts out a radio signal that you tune your head unit to. These of course, aren't cheap.

Alot of the new head units have Ipod docs or those line-in ports, so keep that in mind if you get a new one.

Which is better for my car? This setup http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/ele/1818675842.html

He said he will take $200 for the whole setup above with speakers & amp & the one Alpine Sub

Or this setup? But I am still shy on the amp. But these are TWO Type R Alpine speakers in a PROBOX, The other sub is just a normal Alpine sub in a normal Box http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/pts/1807966193.html

I want the base to thump on hip hop songs. But also tone down on country songs

Judging by the specs, those are the dual voice coil 12's, so you'd need a lot of amp and a lot mids and highs on an amp as well so as not to drown out the music w/ bass.

So the setup you suggested at first or go with the Two 12inch subs? Also my back seat has center section that folds down with a cup holder that allows entrance in to my trunk if I want the sound to come through better.

The Alpine's will definitely hit harder/deeper, but that still leaves you needing an amp, and crappy stock speakers for the mids and highs. I think the first set up is near perfect for what you need, as it's an over-all package, and you could use the money you'd be spending on an amp for the alpines on a decent head unit with provisions for your Ipod.

I have a 10 in. cvr kicker in a sealed box that would rattle that shit more than you would want. $100 for that and all the power cables, rca cables, they're 0 guage, so that right there would cost you.

I wouldn't however recommend you bump any system with your dog in the trunk.,

Really want to stay with my stock head unit! I just like the stock look of the dash! But with that setup can I keep my stock head unit still?

That would give me $200 to get all this installed & do the IPOD adapter. Who knows I might even have enough to do the HID headlights & foglights too

Call a stereo shop and find out what size speakers will fit in your stock locations then double check to see those in the package will fit. If they do, go w/ the package and get you a decent aftermarket head unit and your dash kit and sub install kit. I have ALL the wire you'd need for your speakers that I'll give you. I just need what's left over for when I reinstall my stuff.

Can I just drop the car off to you & pay you to install it?

Also do I have to get a new Head Unit to run this stuff? That will put me over budget fast. Hell a good used head unit that will match my Red Interior lights is a easy $200 & I think Pioneer is the only unit I know of that has a Red lighting

Also do I have to get a new Head Unit to run this stuff? That will put me over budget fast. Hell a good used head unit that will match my Red Interior lights is a easy $200 & I think Pioneer is the only unit I know of that has a Red lighting
Jvc makes a real good one that can be changed to 25 different colors and red is one of them and you can plug a I Phone, I touch, memory stick etc... up to it, i think their less than 200 bux new. Jim sells them and installed on in my dads truck and its a real nice stereo.

Buying a head unit for red lighting is like buying a specific cam for the sound it makes...

That having been said you can run aftermarket speakers on the stock head unit, but I wouldn't expect too much of an increase in sound quality, as the system is only as good as it's weakest link.

if you do the aftermarket headunit make sure to get the adapter that will still let you use the steering wheel controls. i dont really think the aftermarket units are a neccesity, and i would personally go for a sealed box over the ported. im not sure on the GP's but i know infinity makes a front component set that will fit the standard hole for the woofers and then with some "minor" mods you can fit the tweeters in the factory locations.

I have two alpine type r 12s in a slot port PRO box. Powered by a free amp I got. 400w RMS Sony. I need a bigger amp but it sounds good enough for now. Also I got all that for 300 used.

Why do you pay for instal? It's easy as shit to begin with.

I'd replace the headunit and speakers before thinking about subs and Amps.

No sense in having massive bass with out having decent sound to start with.

Pioneer makes a decent headunit for 160 ub4100 series. And decent 3 way speakers from pioneer aswell. Alpine has good speakers but I don't care for their h/u, to many buttons.

Free harness, dash bezel, instructions and speaker harness.

Back when I bought my h/u and speakers, I got instant 50 off and free shipping because I bought all one brand.

You have to understand that you're dealing with sound waves. You want to catch the waves at peak amplitude, so distance from the ear is not always a bad thing.

Distance is one thing, but having to travel through a padded back seat is a bit different. Perhaps I worded it wrong, but I meant that the 10" is in the cab, and not stuffed in a trunk.
